This position supports the safe and efficient operation of County facilities by completing maintenance tasks, responding to service requests, and assisting with inspections and facility improvements. Duties and Responsibilities Responds to routine maintenance and service requests. Performs corrective and preventative maintenance on all equipment and building systems. Performs a wide range of facility renovations and repair work. Utilizes a computerized maintenance management system (Asset Essentials) on a mobile device to create new work orders, complete assigned preventative maintenance work orders, complete assigned work order requests, etc. Performs inspections and/or operational tests of equipment and systems to determine proper operation and current condition. Performs scheduled and routine maintenance on mechanical, electrical, HVAC and other related equipment and systems. Works with the Maintenance Supervisor to purchase tools, equipment and materials needed. Other Duties Assigned Repairs plumbing systems by clearing stoppages, replacing sections of broken pipe, repairs leaks, clears drains, etc. Installs, troubleshoots and repairs plumbing fixtures and control devices for lavatories, drinking fountains, shower systems, etc. Paints surfaces by using standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling and spraying. Mixes, pours, spreads and levels concrete on surfaces and structures such as walls, sidewalks, steps, curbs, ramp, etc. Fixes, replaces and refinishes floors. Repairs doors and replaces hardware such as locks and closers. Cleans, maintains and repairs steam boilers, water heaters and replace parts as needed. Performs roof maintenance. Repairs cabinets, desks, tables and other office furniture. Repairs windows, frames and screens. Lays floor tile and carpeting. Clears stairs and sidewalks of snow and ice. Welds metal for repairs. Assists the grounds crew, custodians and construction crew as needed. Inventories parts stock Performs administrative functions such as responding to emails, answering phone calls, typing reports, etc. Respond to fire alarms and be familiar with fire panels and systems. Operates a variety of equipment and machines including saws, drills and various hand tools to perform work. Maintains tools and equipment in a safe, clean and proper working condition. Assures compliance with safety practices and procedures. Required Skills and Abilities Be able to use a computer for ordering and researching parts. Follow written and verbal instructions. Interpret blueprints, shop drawings, sketches and diagrams. Effectively and safely, operate a variety of tools and equipment. Comply with detailed label precautions. Ability to maintain effective working relationships. Maintain consistent and courteous customer service. Understand that working hours for this position will vary and may include weekends. Must be able to work independently with little direction. Education and Experience High School diploma or G.E.D. Prior experience in a job related field is preferred. Licenses and Certifications Must have a valid Texas Driver License. Physical Demands and Work Environment Must be able to work in both outdoor and indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures or inclement weather conditions. Exposure to chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, fumes and hazardous substances. Work performed in and around a jail facility, involves an element of personal danger and caution must be exercised when working around inmates. Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work. Must be able to climb and descend ladders or scaffolding. Must be able to work in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Good vision is required to read printed materials, computer screens and mobile devices and to distinguish colors. Hearing and speech to communicate in person, over the phone or radio. Finger dexterity needed to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, mobile device and to operate tools and equipment. Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach while performing duties. Must be able to use masks, respirators or other devices as needed. Possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment. Travel The Maintenance Mechanic must be able to drive a pick-up truck. May occasionally be required to attend training classes, seminars or conferences.
