Job Description

The Maintenance Technician - Utilities performs intermediate skilled trades work; inspects sewer lines for breaks and infiltration, assists in the repair of broken water lines and sewer mains, installing, repairing and maintaining streets, drainage ways and related facilities, sidewalks and catch basins, pouring and finishing concrete, operating a variety of heavy equipment, performing ground maintenance, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Maintenance Team Lead - Utilities. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions . Performs street maintenance including pothole repair and curb maintenance. Performs mowing and trimming at Town facilities and properties including some landscaping. Installs, maintains and repairs traffic control devices and street signs. Assists with snow removal and ice control for the Town. Performs cleaning and painting projects including painting curbs as needed. Performs basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical projects as needed for Town facilities and properties. Assists with set up and tear down of Town events. Executes other job duties as necessary. Required High School diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements Obtain Confined Space Training within six months of hire. Obtain CPR and First Aid, Flagging and Work Zone Safety, and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Flagger Certifications within six months of hire. Obtain valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in the Commonwealth of Virginia within six months of hire. Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for position. Valid driver's license. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Some knowledge of streets drainage, buildings, grounds, utilities, landscape areas and related construction, maintenance and repair procedures; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of specialized equipment and hand tools to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to read and write; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 100 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather); work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
