Job Description Job Description Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic to support fleet maintenance operations for Sumter Sanitation. This position is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty waste collection vehicles to ensure safe operation, regulatory compliance, and maximum equipment reliability. The ideal candidate will have strong diesel engine troubleshooting experience, extensive hydraulic system knowledge, and the ability to perform preventative maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicle systems. Key Responsibilities Preventive Maintenance Perform scheduled maintenance services including oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, tire rotations, and brake adjustments. Conduct inspections to identify potential mechanical issues before equipment failure occurs. Maintain accurate service records and maintenance schedules. Diagnostics & Repairs Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and powertrain issues using diagnostic software and testing equipment. Interpret fault codes and troubleshoot diesel engine systems.
Repair and rebuild components including:
Hydraulic systems Electrical systems Brake systems Steering and suspension systems Transmissions Diesel engines Hydraulic & Specialized Equipment Maintenance Maintain and repair hydraulic cylinders, pumps, motors, hoses, and pneumatic systems. Service waste collection equipment, including packer body components and related systems. Perform adjustments and repairs to ensure equipment reliability and safety. Roadside & Emergency Service Respond to roadside breakdowns and emergency repair calls. Diagnose issues and perform on-site repairs when possible to minimize downtime. Safety & Compliance Conduct vehicle inspections and complete repairs identified through Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs). Ensure all vehicles meet DOT and OSHA regulations and safety standards. Follow company safety policies and procedures at all times. Documentation & Inventory Complete work orders, repair documentation, and maintenance reports. Record labor hours, parts usage, and completed repairs accurately. Order replacement parts and assist with inventory management. Required Qualifications Minimum 3 years of experience in heavy-duty truck or fleet maintenance. Strong knowledge of hydraulic cylinders, pumps, hoses, and related systems. Experience using diesel engine diagnostic software. Ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems. Understanding of DOT and OSHA regulations. Experience performing preventive maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty vehicles. Clean driving record. Ability to pass background screening and drug testing.
