- Heavy Equipment is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment used in municipal operations.
This position performs preventive maintenance and repairs on construction equipment, utility vehicles, trucks, tractors, loaders, excavators, backhoes, mowers, and other specialized equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation. Duties include troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and diesel engine systems. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment. Perform preventive maintenance including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, fluid checks, and scheduled service intervals. Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, brakes, steering, suspension, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems. Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment and software to identify equipment malfunctions. Repair or replace defective components, assemblies, and parts. Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and equipment modifications as required. Maintain and repair hydraulic pumps, cylinders, hoses, valves, and related components. Inspect equipment for safety and operational deficiencies and recommend corrective actions. Perform field repairs and emergency roadside or job-site service when necessary. Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and parts inventory documentation. Order and track parts, supplies, and repair materials as needed. Operate heavy equipment for testing, diagnostics, and verification of repairs. Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations, environmental requirements, and departmental procedures. Maintain a clean and organized shop and work area. Assist with training and mentoring less experienced mechanics. Respond to after-hours emergencies and participate in on-call rotations as assigned. Perform other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of diesel engines and heavy equipment systems. Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, fuel, and emissions systems. Ability to diagnose mechanical failures and determine appropriate repairs. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and service bulletins. Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic instruments. Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and commercial vehicles. Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple assignments. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and the public. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices associated with fleet maintenance. Technical training in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, automotive technology, or a related field preferred. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in diesel engine and heavy equipment maintenance and repair; municipal fleet experience preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Licenses and Certifications Valid Georgia Driver's License required. Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment preferred. ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certification or equivalent certifications preferred. Welding certification is desirable but not required. Working Conditions and Physical Abilities Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds. Work in standing, kneeling, crouching, bending, climbing, and crawling positions for extended periods. Ability to climb on and under heavy equipment and vehicles. Operate hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment requiring manual dexterity. Work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity. Ability to distinguish colors for electrical and hydraulic diagnostics. Ability to hear and respond to alarms, equipment sounds, and verbal instructions. Work is performed in both shop and field environments. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts, diesel exhaust, oils, lubricants, chemicals, noise, vibration, and adverse weather conditions. Emergency repairs may require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
