Job Description
1. Inspection and Diagnostics Perform routine inspections of diesel engines and truck components to identify issues. Use diagnostic tools and equipment (e.g., computer-based diagnostic systems) to analyze engine performance and troubleshoot problems. Inspect trailers for structural damage, malfunctioning parts, or wear and tear, including the braking system, suspension, tires, and lights. 2. Engine Repair and Maintenance Repair or replace damaged components of diesel engines, such as cylinders, pistons, injectors, and fuel pumps. Perform overhauls of diesel engines, ensuring that the engine is running at optimal performance. Change engine oil, fuel filters, air filters, and other consumables regularly to ensure proper engine function. 3. Transmission and Drivetrain Repairs Repair and maintain manual and automatic transmissions , including clutch systems, gearboxes, and driveline components. Inspect and repair the driveshaft, axles, and differential systems. 4. Brake System Repair Inspect and repair brake systems , including air brakes and hydraulic brake systems. Replace brake pads, discs, air lines, valves, and adjust brake systems for proper functionality. 5. Electrical Systems Troubleshoot electrical issues , including wiring, alternators, starters, lighting systems, and battery charging systems. Diagnose and repair problems with truck computer systems or sensors that control engine functions. 6. Suspension and Steering Repair Inspect and repair the suspension system , including shock absorbers, air bags, leaf springs, and wheel alignment. Maintain and repair steering systems , including steering pumps, linkages, and gearboxes. 7. Tire and Wheel Maintenance Inspect tire wear patterns and replace tires as necessary. Balance wheels and perform tire rotations to ensure even wear and proper handling. 8. Exhaust and Fuel System Repair Inspect and repair exhaust systems , including mufflers, catalytic converters, and diesel particulate filters (DPF). Repair or replace fuel tanks, lines, fuel injectors, and related components. 9. Air Conditioning and Heating Systems Maintain and repair HVAC systems for climate control inside the truck and trailer, including air conditioning compressors, condensers, and heating units. 10. Preventive Maintenance Perform routine maintenance tasks as part of scheduled service, including oil changes, fluid checks, and component lubrication. Record and document maintenance work, repairs, and inspections, including any parts replaced. 11. Customer Service Communicate with drivers and fleet managers to understand the issues with the vehicle and explain the required repairs. Provide recommendations for improving the efficiency or longevity of the truck or trailer. 12. Trailer-Specific Repairs Repair or replace trailer components , such as brakes, suspension, electrical wiring, and couplings. Ensure proper functionality of air brakes and lighting systems on trailers. 13. Welding and Fabrication In some cases, diesel mechanics may be required to weld or fabricate parts for semi-trucks or trailers that have been damaged or are no longer available. 14. Safety Compliance Ensure that all repairs comply with federal and state regulations (such as DOT regulations for commercial vehicles). Stay updated on industry standards and safety protocols. 15. Record-Keeping Maintain detailed logs of repairs, parts used, and services performed for inventory control and warranty purposes.
Key Tools and Skills:
Use of hand tools , diagnostic equipment, power tools, and computerized diagnostic software. In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, heavy-duty truck systems, and various mechanical repair techniques. Ability to work with large, heavy components and equipment safely.
