The Mechanical Designer / Drafter is responsible for creating accurate and production-ready drawings and models to support the development and manufacturing of Collins Bus products. This role works closely with engineers, production teams, and R D to translate concepts and sketches into practical, buildable designs that support high-quality, safe, and efficient manufacturing. Success in this position requires a self-starter who is enthusiastic about making a difference, open to new ideas, and thrives in a collaborative, hands-on environment. The ideal candidate will be eager to learn, contribute, and work across departments to help solve problems and continuously improve our products and processes.Key Responsibilities:
Produce fully-dimensioned 2D drawings and 3D models of fabricated and machined components, assemblies, and fixtures. Translate engineering sketches, marked-up prints, or layout concepts into detailed designs. Develop and maintain accurate design documentation, including models, drawings, and BOM data in accordance with industry and company standards. Support product development efforts with prototype concepts and manufacturing documentation. Design jigs and fixtures to aid in efficient, repeatable production. Ensure revision control and drawing status is maintained and clearly communicated. Participate in design reviews and cross-functional collaboration to improve manufacturability and product quality. Assist in the creation of customer manuals, installation guides, and service illustrations. Provide design support for continuous improvement initiatives and lean manufacturing efforts.Preferred Qualifications:
Associate degree or technical certification in Computer-Aided Drafting/Design or related field. Minimum 2 years of experience in mechanical drafting, preferably with fabricated sheet metal or welded assemblies. Proficient in Autodesk Inventor (or similar CAD software), with a strong understanding of sheet metal and assembly workflows. Working knowledge of mechanical design best practices, tolerancing, and material selection. Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and DFMA (Design for Manufacturing & Assembly) is a plus. Experience with Autodesk LISP routines for automation or drawing customization is a plus. Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality and accuracy. Effective communication skills for collaboration with engineering, production, and support departments.Working Environment:
Office and production floor environments (temperature and noise level may vary). Frequent interaction with shop floor personnel, including observation of parts, assemblies, and prototype installations. Use of PPE required in designated manufacturing areas (safety glasses, hearing protection, safety shoes, etc.).Tools & Equipment Used:
Office and engineering tools including computers, CAD software, printers, and measurement tools. Occasional use of hand tools and exposure to manufacturing equipment during prototype and fixture development.Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods. Regular lifting of up to 40 lbs. unassisted. Manual dexterity to operate drafting tools and measurement devices.
