GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor and Maintenance Foreman. Performs Maintenance Department activities, including the maintenance and repair of vehicles and auxiliary equipment. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to drug and alcohol testing as defined in Bay Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Drug & Alcohol Testing Policy for Safety Sensitive Employees.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

Repairs and overhauls major chassis units such as motors, transmissions, clutches, differentials and brake systems. Installs and repairs air compressors and air-conditioning units. Installs and repairs safety devices and equipment. Performs or assigns welding tasks. Performs preventative maintenance on all vehicles. Performs the repair on diesel engines. Installs and repairs entire hydraulic and electrical systems Performs other duties as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor and Vehicle Maintenance Assistant Supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High school plus specialized training equivalent to no less than 2 years of college level courses or technical training in vehicle repair. Must possess skills to perform a wide variety of interrelated or nonstandard procedural assignments and resolve a wide range of problems requiring extended training. Must posses a valid Michigan Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements as required by Federal/State regulations. Job requires no less than 2 years of previous job-related experience. As a condition of continued employment, mechanics must have all required state certifications and exhibit the ability to progress from a C Mechanic to a B Mechanic within 1 year of hire date and progress from a B Mechanic to an A Mechanic within 1 year of achieving B Mechanic status. The purpose of the physical requirements is to determine a mechanics qualification to operate and perform safety sensitive maintenance on a Bay Metro Vehicle. The medical examiner must be familiar with the mechanics responsibilities and work environment using this Job Description. DiabetesMust not have uncontrolled diagnosis of diabetes. Cardiovascular ConditionHas no current clinical diagnosis of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, coronary insufficiency, thrombosis or any other cardiovascular disease of a variety known to be accompanied by syncope, dyspnea, collapse or congestive cardiac failure. Respiratory DysfunctionHas no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of a respiratory dysfunction likely to interfere with ability to control and drive a Bay Metro Transit Bus. Does not have Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome that may cause excessive daytime sleepiness. HypertensionHas no current clinical uncontrolled high blood pressure likely to interfere with ability to operate a Bay Metro Transit vehicle safely. EpilepsyHas no established medical history of uncontrolled epilepsy. Drivers with a history of epilepsy/seizures may be qualified to drive if seizure-free for a 5-year period or more. Mental DisordersA person is physically qualified if they have no mental, nervous, organic or functional disease or psychiatric disorder that could result in sudden loss of control. HearingMust be able to hear normal conversational speech. No Significant hearing loss that is not correctable.
