Position Summary :
Under the supervision of the Transportation Manager and oversight of the Lead Mechanic, performs a variety of skilled repair and maintenance tasks on buses, trucks, cars and other power-driven equipment
Essential Job Functions :
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties, which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Performs mechanical duties in the repair, inspection and maintenance of buses, trucks, cars and other power-driven equipment, with guidance and direction from the Lead Mechanic. Assists in the machining of parts for automotive equipment and machinery according to specifications. Prepares necessary records pertaining to work performed. Follows a predetermined preventative maintenance program on buses, trucks, cars and other power-driven equipment. Assists in maintaining inventory of equipment, supplies and materials. Conducts performance tests and inspections of new and newly repaired apparatus, vehicles and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable standards. Submits reports and maintains detailed records of all tests, repairs, inventory and inspections. Follows a predetermined preventative maintenance program on buses, trucks, cars and other power-driven equipment. Performs snow plowing around Otsego County Bus System with Tractor or pick-up truck. Performs other duties as directed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications :

Requirements include the following:
High school diploma or GED with college or vocational coursework in automotive repair. Practical knowledge of heavy and light automotive mechanical equipment maintenance normally acquired through at least three years of automotive maintenance and repair experience. The county, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience. Possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License. Negative results on pre-employment and random USDOT drug and alcohol screens for this "safety sensitive" position. Must have at least two state mechanical certifications at the time of employment. Certification as a State Master Mechanic or NIASE certification in diesel, gas engine, and brake repair is preferred. Ability to use a variety of automotive tools and diagnostic equipment to perform automotive repairs. Ability to inspect and troubleshoot a variety of automotive problems. Knowledge of the practices and safety issues involved in maintaining vehicles and equipment. Ability to effectively diagnose equipment problems and work cooperatively with equipment users to maintain preventive maintenance schedules. Ability to maintain accurate and complete maintenance records, both in electronic and non-electronic format. Ability to read and follow instructions and equipment manufacturer's manuals. Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with county employees, contractors to the county, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials, bus patrons and the public. Skill in the use of office equipment and technology and the ability to learn new software programs applicable to the position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, squat, use hands and fingers, talk, hear, and view written documents. The employee uses hand strength to grasp tools and may climbs ladders. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, such as to operate and repair vibrating machinery, use wrenches, hand tools, etc., and operate motorized equipment and vehicles. The employee must lift or push/pull objects of up to 50 lbs. without assistance. Accommodation will be made, as needed, for employees required to lift or move objects that exceed this weight. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in both indoor and outdoor weather conditions. The employee works near moving mechanical equipment.
