Exempt Located at the Careerline Tech Center in Holland, MI, the Diesel / Heavy Equipment Mechanics (HEM) Instructor is responsible for leading the design, delivery, and instruction of our comprehensive diesel engine systems and heavy equipment maintenance program. The primary objective of this position is to transition industry expertise into an engaging educational environment, preparing high school students for high-demand career pathways, apprenticeships, and post-secondary education. The role directly supports student achievement and district operations by cultivating a safe, industry-standard learning lab that fosters both technical proficiency and professional skills.
Essential Job Functions Oversee Curriculum:
Develop and deliver a rigorous Career and Technical Education (CTE) curriculum aligned with Michigan's Heavy Equipment Maintenance competencies and current industry standards. Ensure that instruction prepares students for career pathways and post-secondary options.
Deliver Instruction:
Provide hands-on and engaging instruction in diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, diagnostics, powertrains, welding fundamentals, and equipment repair practices using both classroom and lab/shop settings.
Incorporate Technology and Tools:
Utilize and embed industry-grade equipment, diagnostic tools, simulation tools, and digital technologies into daily instruction to reflect current real-world practice standards.
Support Work-Based Learning:
Establish and maintain partnerships with local businesses, municipalities, mechanical contractors, and contractors to arrange internships, job shadowing, equipment demonstrations, and apprenticeships. Maintain an active Program Advisory Committee to ensure program relevancy.
Create and Nurture Partnerships:
Collaborate with industry partners, staff, community colleges, and apprenticeship programs to provide students with opportunities for career advancement, employment, or further post-secondary training.
Support Student Credential Attainment:
Directly facilitate and supervise student testing for industry-recognized credentials (e.g., OSHA-10, State of Michigan Engine Repair
- Diesel, and other relevant certifications).
Develop Students:
Foster the development of professional and employability skills, including safety awareness, communication, responsibility, ethical practices, and teamwork. Assist students with post-secondary planning, resume building, and interview preparation.
Keep Accurate Records:
Maintain accurate student records of academic performance, attendance, certifications earned, and program outcomes. Ensure all records comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
Oversee Budget and Equipment:
Manage the program budget. Order, maintain, and manage all necessary tools, equipment, parts, and training materials to ensure safe and effective instruction.
Assure Safety and Compliance:
Maintain a safe and professional shop environment by enforcing safety procedures, routine equipment maintenance, and proper PPE use aligned with OSHA, MIOSHA, and industry standards. Implement and enforce strict safety and equipment protocols Engage in

OR eligibility for an Annual Career Authorization (ACA) requiring a minimum of 4,000 hours of recent and relevant diesel or heavy equipment industry experience within the past 6 years that can be documented and verified. Experience working with high school students in classroom and lab settings is preferred. Certifications and Qualifications OSHA General Industry Trainer Certification (or willing to obtain) Minimum of three years of recent, relevant work experience in the diesel or heavy equipment mechanics field. Current CPR/First Aid certification preferred. Physical and Environmental Requirements Physical Stamina:
Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, and safely handling tools, heavy equipment, and machinery in a shop environment.
Manual Dexterity:
Must possess the fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination necessary to operate specialized heavy equipment hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic testing equipment.
Sensory Abilities:
Requires the visual acuity to read small gauges, diagnostic screens, and wiring schematics; the auditory ability to diagnose mechanical sounds, engine knocks, or vibrations; and the olfactory sense to detect fluid leaks, exhaust compliance, or electrical scorching.
Environmental Conditions:
Work is split between a standard classroom and an active mechanical shop environment, subject to varying temperatures, mechanical noise, and exposure to oils, grease, and shop chemicals. Standard ADA-consistent accommodations apply.
