THE POSITION
Join the Department of Transportation as a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic and become part of a team dedicated to keeping essential equipment in top condition. This position provides hands-on experience with repairs, inspections, and diagnostics. You will help ensure that vehicles and machinery stay safe and ready for use. This is a meaningful way to develop your skills while supporting important statewide operations.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position supports the upkeep and safe operation of vehicles and equipment by performing repairs, inspections, and maintenance tasks. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:
Vehicle Repair:
Repair vehicles and equipment including engines, brakes, electrical components, and mechanical systems
Preventative Maintenance:
Carry out routine maintenance programs, tune ups, tire changes, and system adjustments
State Inspections:
Conduct official safety and emissions inspections and complete related paperwork
Diagnostic Work:
Use diagnostic tools and procedures to identify problems and determine repair methods
Equipment Care:
Clean, service, and make field adjustments to equipment to reduce wear and improve performance
Safety Awareness:
Follow safety procedures, report hazards, and maintain a clean and safe work area Interested in learning more? Additional details regarding this position can be found in the position description.
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Full-time employment Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Shifts may vary seasonally/due to weather and/or based on operational needs
Telework:
You will not have the option to telework in this position.
Salary:
Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $55,492.00 (before taxes). REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent. This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment. All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period. This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation's Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
