To Be Determined Job Description Temporary Summer Position (6-8 Weeks), June-July 2026 Position Purpose The Temporary Substitute Diesel Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work involving the maintenance, inspection, diagnosis, and repair of school buses, activity buses, and other division vehicles/equipment. This temporary summer position supports the Transportation Department during periods of staffing shortages, increased summer maintenance needs, or special projects. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on school buses and division vehicles. Diagnose and repair diesel engines, brakes, suspension systems, steering components, electrical systems, and related mechanical equipment. Conduct routine oil changes, fluid checks, tire repairs/replacements, and filter changes. Assist with state inspections and ensure vehicles meet safety standards. Maintain accurate service and repair records. Operate tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, and shop equipment safely and appropriately. Respond to mechanical issues in a timely manner to minimize vehicle downtime. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. Follow all applicable safety procedures, regulations, and division policies. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor or designee. Qualifications Experience in diesel mechanics, automotive repair, or related field preferred. Knowledge of diesel engines, bus maintenance procedures, and vehicle safety standards preferred. Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues. Ability to safely use mechanic tools and equipment. Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks efficiently. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred but not required. Physical Requirements Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects. Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in varying temperatures for extended periods. Ability to safely operate shop equipment and vehicles. Terms of Employment Temporary summer position lasting approximately 6-8 weeks. Hourly rate determined by the school division. No benefits associated with this temporary position unless otherwise required by law. Work schedule to be determined by the Transportation Department. Reports To Transportation Supervisor
