Job Description

Performs major and minor repair and replacement work on buses. Work is performed under the supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent and Senior Mechanic. Perform major and minor repair and replacement work; Perform selected repairs and replacement of diesel driven equipment; Repair and overhaul brakes, ignition and fuel systems, etc.; Repair, overhaul and main special equipment; Disassemble, repair and reassemble air compressor, pumps, and related equipment; Perform diversified electrical work on diesel equipment, such as installing batteries terminals, repair and adjusting lights, installing generators and starters; Service air conditioning systems for heavy diesel equipment; Maintain housekeeping standards set forth by Maintenance Superintendent; Promote safety in the work place; and Perform other duties, as assigned. Must possess a High School Diploma or GED. Knowledge of methods, tools and equipment used in repairing heavy diesel equipment. Knowledge and skill in the use of shop tools, such as drills, grinders, micrometers, and welding equipment. Ability to diagnose more common defects in the motors and bodies of buses; to detect, by inspection, any worn or broken bus parts. Ability to interpret work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts. Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports. Ability to follow and execute oral and written instructions accurately. An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the position. Preferred Qualifications - Must have one (1) year of experience in repairing automotive, heavy diesel or light power-driven equipment. Possession of a valid appropriate commercial driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must be able to obtain passenger endorsement within 6 months of employment; failure to do so may result in termination. Must obtain a Type 2 Air Conditioning License within 6 months of employment; failure to do so may result in termination.
