Hydraulics Full Job Description The Role:
We are seeking an energized, experienced Assistant Mechanic to support our Lead Mechanic in maintaining a fleet of approximately 65 vehicles and a wide range of construction equipment across our fence, paving, and sports courts divisions. This is a hands-on shop role with a mix of preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair work.
Responsibilities:
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair gas and diesel engines on fleet trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment (pavers, rollers, skid steers, compactors, etc.) Perform preventive maintenance: oil changes, fluid checks, brakes, tires, filters, and scheduled service intervals Service and repair small engines (compactors, saws, pumps, generators) Hydraulic system inspection, troubleshooting, and basic repair Welding and basic fabrication as needed for repairs and modifications Support DOT compliance — annual inspections, pre-trip inspection assistance, and vehicle/trailer documentation Order parts and maintain inventory of common-use shop supplies Maintain accurate repair logs and equipment service records Keep the shop and yard clean, organized, and safe Assist with field service calls and equipment swaps when needed
Qualifications Required:
3-5 years of experience as a mechanic (automotive, diesel, fleet, or heavy equipment) Working knowledge of small engines, gas and diesel systems, and basic hydraulics Valid State of Wisconsin driver's license with a clean motor vehicle record Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work on your feet in a non-climate-controlled shop Comfortable working outdoors in all seasons when field service is needed Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions Self-motivated; able to manage multiple tasks and prioritize independently Good interpersonal skills — we are a small, collaborative crew
Preferred:
CDL Class A or B MIG and/or stick welding experience DOT inspection / Wisconsin annual inspection certification Experience with paving equipment, trailers, or construction fleet maintenance
