Job Description

Performs skilled technical work to ensure the safe, reliable, and accurate operation of protection and supervision systems across the electric grid. Performs testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and commissioning of protective relays, control circuits, and substation equipment to prevent misoperations and maintain system integrity. Operates and maintains substation equipment such as current converters, voltage transformers, and circuit breakers that regulate flow of electricity through substations and over distribution lines to consumers. Demonstrates and applies strong analytical skills, sound judgement, and a commitment to safety to support dependable performance and continuous improvement to the system.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
None.
ON CALL YES RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs routine and corrective maintenance on microprocessor, solid-state, and electromechanical relays. Diagnoses misoperations by analyzing event data, reviewing oscillography, inspecting wiring, and coordinating with engineering. Troubleshoots protection, control, and communication issues to restore proper system operation. Conducts relay testing using industry standard test equipment to verify pickup, timing, logic, and system coordination. Validate relay settings, logic, CT/VT connections, and configuration files against approved engineering documentation. Supports system protection schemes. Reviews and interprets electrical drawings, schematics logic diagrams, and wiring prints. Inspect and maintain substation control circuits, trip circuits, breaker auxiliary contacts, and system feedback signals. Verify proper operation of breakers, reclosers, meters, SCADA devices, and other substation components. Maintain accurate test records, reports, and documentation to meet compliance standards and internal procedures. Understands and adheres to established control procedures, such as proper authorization of expenditures. Immediately report any suspected control deficiencies or fraudulent activities to supervisors or through established whistleblowing channels. Job Requirements
EDUCATION
Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, or a closely related technical field.

Florida Commercial Driver's License Class B with airbrake endorsement required or ability to obtain within 18 months..
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities are required for this job, with or without an accommodation. These include close, distant, and color vision. The incumbent is regularly exposed to risks such as wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions, including extreme cold and/or heat; and risk of electrical shock.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE DUTIES
This position is part of New Smyrna Beach Utilities Emergency Management Team and, as such, shall be expected to perform all duties that are assigned during an emergency management operation. Any additional compensation, above the normal weekly salary shall be outlined in the Human Resources Manual or Collective Bargaining Agreement. Failure to appear to perform emergency management assignment and to work assigned shifts as scheduled by NSBU's Emergency Incident Commander or individuals designated by the General Manager/CEO to assign such functions may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
