The hiring range for this position is $49,800.37 (minimum salary) to $68,582.68 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for a Substation Technician I. The hiring range for this position is $57,753.17 (minimum salary) to $79,534.89 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for a Substation Technician II. The hiring range for this position is $70,366.61 (minimum salary) to $96,905.52 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for a Substation Technician III. Substation Technician I This position performs technical work assisting with the installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical substation and related equipment. Substation Technician II This position performs skilled technical work participating in the installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical equipment, instruments and controls in substations. Substation Technician III This position performs difficult skilled technical work participating in and supervising the installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical and electronic meters and other recording devices, instruments and controls in substations. Substation Technician I Major Duties Assist in the installation, operation, inspection, repair, and maintenance of all types of equipment used in electrical substations. Assists in the installation, construction, and modification of all types of equipment, structure, bus, communications and control schemes, etc. used in substations. Assist in the testing and repair of high voltage transformers, circuit breakers, reclosers, capacitors, voltage regulators and other related equipment. Includes associated record keeping. Leads the installation, operation, inspection, repair, and maintenance of all types of equipment used in electrical substations. Leads the installation, construction, and modification of all types of equipment, structure, bus, communications and control schemes, etc. used in substations. Leads the testing and repair of high voltage transformers, circuit breakers, reclosers, capacitors, voltage regulators and other related equipment. Trains subordinates in proper work procedures and job safety Responds to after-hours calls as needed Works during storms and/or storm response performing duties as assigned Performs related tasks as required. Guidelines National Electric Code National Electric Safety Code City of Wilson Safety and Policy Manuals APPA Safety Manual OSHA Regulations Supervisory/Management Responsibility Supervision is exercised over assigned personnel when Substation Supervisor is not available Substation Technician I Education/Experience Requirements Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Specialized training in substation equipment and apparatus preferred. Completion of Substation Career Development Program, Module One required for promotion to Substation Technician II. Possession of a valid North Carolina Class "A" CDL permit within six months of hire. Knowledge Requirements Knowledge of electrical wiring, control circuits, relays, and other electrical equipment. Knowledge of high voltage equipment and related safety specifications. Knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code. Knowledge of substation equipment operations. Knowledge of hand tools, test instruments and power tools. Knowledge of proper safety procedures, rules and regulations. Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions. Skill in preparing clear and accurate reports. Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships. Skill in setting priorities for competing projects. Skill in performing mathematical calculations. Skill in operating computers and other standard office equipment. Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication. Other Requirements Must be able to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime and be on a rotating schedule to standby to be called in to work after normal working hours. Must reside no more than 30 minutes from the Operations Center Substation Technician II Education/Experience Requirements Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education Specialized training in substation equipment and apparatus preferred. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with two to three years of experience or service Completion of Substation Career Development Program, Module Two required for promotion to Substation Technician III Possession of a valid North Carolina Class "A" CDL permit within six months of hire. Possession of a valid North Carolina Class "A" CDL license within twelve months of hire. Must be able to perform the physical activities of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking and hearing. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform job related tasks. The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions and may be subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens.
