SENIOR RELAY TECHNCIAN
Position Number 259002 FLSA Status Non-Exempt Full Time/Part Time Full Time Salary $33.30 - $42.62 Hourly, Depending on Qualifications Job Summary Under limited supervision, performs highly skilled work in the safe and reliable operation of relay and control equipment in electrical substations. May provide leadership, supervision, work assignments, training, and guidance to less-experienced staff. Responsibilities Completes the installation, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relaying equipment, relaying schemes, and associated communication equipment. Assists Relaying Supervisor with microprocessor protective relay programming and testing, trip checks, and function testing for substation equipment. Verifies control and electric schematics during the commissioning of new substation equipment, and makes recommendations to modify electric, wiring, control, and schematics diagrams to ensure proper operation of the new equipment. Maintains records of relay installations, testing, and calibration for all relay devices. Carries out function testing of substation control circuits on relay panels, transformers, and circuit breaker changeouts. Completes end-to-end relay testing to verify Fiber or Carrier Systems. Responsible for federally mandated (North American Electric Reliability Corporation - NERC) testing on protection system in accordance with NERC's Protection and Control (PRC) 005 Standards; ensures documentation/evidence is archived in designated location. Coordinates with and assists other BPUB Departments, outside vendors, consultants, and contractors for maintenance and improvement projects. Responds to electric system/equipment disturbance events; analyzes relay data and completes preliminary report(s). Completes other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of electric theory and protective relay theory principles and applications. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with energized lines. Thorough knowledge of wiring and troubleshooting of Alternating Current/Direct Current (AC/DC) control circuits associated with high voltage protection schemes. Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and North American Electric Reliability (NERC) Standards as they pertain to system protection, especially Protection and Control (PRC) 004 & 005 Standards. Extensive knowledge in the operation, maintenance, and programming of relays, electromechanical and microprocessor; Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), General Electric (GE), Basler, and Westinghouse. Knowledge in SEL AcSELeartor TEAM Software, AcSELerator Synchrowave, AcSELerator QuickSet. Knowledge and understanding of relay control drawings, logic circuits, and electrical symbology. Thorough knowledge reading and interpreting electrical one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams. Effective oral and written communication skills in English. Skill in the use of tools and equipment required to perform trouble shooting and repairs of electronic/electromechanical equipment. Computer skills in Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel. Ability to read wiring diagrams. Ability to read, write, and understand technical instructions. Ability to work as a team member as well as independently. Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports. Ability to carry out intensive labor work under emergency and adverse weather conditions. Education & Experience Requirements Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology or related discipline and three (3) years of related experience. Two (2) additional years of related experience in electrical operations and maintenance, with an emphasis on protection relay installation and testing, may substitute for the education requirement. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Requires a valid Texas Driver License or receipt of a valid Texas Driver License within 90 days of relocation to Texas and a safe driving record, as measured by company policy.
