Job Title:
Field Service Engineer Job Description This Field Service Engineer role focuses on installing, commissioning, and optimizing advanced direct digital control (DDC) systems within data center environments. You will ensure that controls, sensors, and networks operate to high performance standards, while proactively solving automation challenges and mitigating project risks. The position combines hands-on technical work with customer-facing responsibilities, including training system owners and collaborating closely with project teams to deliver reliable, efficient building automation and HVAC control solutions. Responsibilities Install and commission advanced DDC systems in data centers, ensuring all controls, sensors, and networked components meet defined performance standards. Optimize system performance by fine-tuning control parameters, validating sensor accuracy, and confirming stable network communication across all devices. Troubleshoot electrical, electronic, and control system issues on-site, diagnosing problems with wiring, sensors, controllers, and network connections. Correct and improve electrical installations in the field, including verifying wiring integrity, terminations, and adherence to system design requirements. Configure, test, and support IP-based communication for modern equipment, including setting up networks, servers, and related infrastructure for controls systems. Identify and resolve automation challenges early in the project lifecycle, using sound technical judgment to mitigate risks before they impact schedules or performance. Collaborate with Project Managers to manage technical risks, provide status updates, and recommend improvements to project execution and system reliability. Train owners and operators on system operation, demonstrating how to use interfaces, monitor performance, and respond to alarms or issues. Provide field service support for HVAC systems and HVAC controls, including commissioning, adjustments, and ongoing service activities. Document work performed, system configurations, and changes made on-site to support future troubleshooting, maintenance, and upgrades. Travel to various customer sites as required to perform installations, commissioning, troubleshooting, and training for contract-based projects. Essential Skills Hands-on experience installing, commissioning, and optimizing advanced DDC systems or similar building automation systems. Proven troubleshooting skills in electrical, electronic, and control systems, including sensors, controllers, and field devices. Practical knowledge of HVAC systems and HVAC controls, with familiarity in working on control sequences and system integration. Ability to understand and correct wiring and basic electrical installations, including reading diagrams and verifying proper connections. Experience working with networking technologies, including IP-based communication, network setup, and basic server configuration. Comfort working with computers and software tools used for configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting control systems. Field service experience in electronics, controls, or related disciplines, with the ability to work independently at customer sites. Willingness and ability to travel for contract assignments and support multiple project locations. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in HVAC controls with exposure to major control platforms such as Johnson Controls, the person, or Siemens systems. Experience in data center environments or other mission-critical facilities where reliability and uptime are essential. Strong problem-solving and risk-mitigation mindset, with the ability to anticipate issues and implement solutions before they affect timelines. Effective communication skills for training owners and collaborating with Project Managers and other stakeholders. Openness to frequent travel, with a preference for candidates based on the West Coast or not farther east than Utah to help minimize travel burden. Work Environment This role is based primarily in data center environments, where you will work with advancedDDC, HVAC
control systems, and IP-based networks in a mission-critical setting. The position involves regular travel to customer sites as part of contract-based field service work. You will use computers, networking equipment, and standard electrical and electronic tools to install, commission, and troubleshoot systems. The workday often includes time on the floor in technical spaces, as well as time spent configuring systems and documenting work. The organization supports its field staff by providing breakfast and lunch on-site and allowing hotel expenses up to a specified amount per night plus a daily per diem for travel assignments Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Phoenix, AZ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $65.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
