Job Title:
Field Service Engineer Job Description The Field Service Engineer installs, programs, and supports complex packaging machinery at customer sites while providing expert troubleshooting and technical guidance. This role combines extensive travel with hands-on work in electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, PLC and HMI programming, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver reliable, high-performance equipment solutions. Responsibilities Interpret and work from detailed schematics and engineering drawings of electrical devices and systems to support equipment design, installation, and troubleshooting. Conduct electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic design activities, ensuring systems integrate effectively with machine controls and peripheral devices. Program machine PLCs using specified software platforms and configure peripheral device programming to meet customer and equipment requirements. Develop and modify HMI programs to provide intuitive operator interfaces and effective machine control and monitoring. Coordinate machine debug, power-up, and validation activities with build and electrical teams to ensure successful system startup and performance. Travel to customer sites to perform equipment installations, runoffs, commissioning, and acceptance testing, often for multi-day or multi-week assignments. Provide on-site troubleshooting support for existing machinery in the field, diagnosing and resolving electrical, control, and mechanical issues. Generate accurate bills of materials from specifications and drawings to support procurement, assembly, and maintenance activities. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, and service, to develop effective solutions tailored to customer needs. Support technical documentation by assisting Technical Writers with information for catalogs, manuals, and other customer-facing materials. Interact professionally with internal personnel, customers, and vendors to communicate technical information, resolve issues, and build strong working relationships. Use a laptop extensively in the field to program, troubleshoot, and edit control logic and HMI applications, spending the majority of time hands-on with software and equipment. Plan and manage travel assignments using internal scheduling systems, aligning with project timelines and customer requirements. Adhere to applicable electrical standards and codes during design, installation, and troubleshooting activities to ensure safety and compliance. Essential Skills 3+ years of experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting in an industrial environment. 3+ years of experience with AutoCAD Electrical for electrical schematic drafting. Proficiency in PLC programming using Allen-Bradley platforms, including RSLogix 5, RSLogix 500, RSLogix 5000, Studio 5000, and Connected Components Workbench (CCW). Experience with HMI programming in the Allen-Bradley environment, particularly using FactoryTalk View (FTView). Strong skills in electrical schematic drafting using AutoCAD Electrical. Hands-on experience with electrical circuit troubleshooting in industrial machinery. Solid understanding of electrical design concepts, including components, circuits, and power distribution. Working knowledge ofNEC, NFPA
79, and UL 508 standards as they apply to industrial equipment. Ability to read and interpret detailed electrical schematics and engineering drawings. Ability to coordinate and execute machine debug, power-up, and validation activities. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for existing machinery in the field. Ability to travel up to 100% of the time, including extended trips and frequent weekend work. Capability to interact effectively with company personnel, customers, and vendors in a professional manner. Residence within a reasonable distance (about one hour) of a major airport to support frequent travel. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET), preferred. Experience in packaging or food and beverage production environments, preferred. Work Environment This role is highly travel-intensive, with up to 100% travel to customer sites, primarily within the United States and occasionally in Canada. Travel assignments typically range from 5 to 10 days, and may extend up to 3 weeks or be as short as 2 to 3 days. When not traveling, the Field Service Engineer works at a large, clean manufacturing facility with automated equipment, located near Cleveland. The role involves extensive laptop use in the field for programming, troubleshooting, and editing PLC and HMI applications.
