Under general supervision and on-site training, performs a variety of semi-skilled and manual work involved in the maintenance, installation, and repair of the PLUS water distribution and wastewater collection system to ensure the proper operation of the system and to provide safe drinking water supply to the public. Reads meters and provides customer service as directed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in the repair, maintenance and installation of PLUS wastewater collection and water distribution lines. Installs or replaces water meters and valves as needed. Excavates dirt and concrete to install, repair or replace pipes. Operates a vehicle to travel to various locations throughout the system area. Performs monthly meter reading. Maintains all water meters and related devices to insure proper working condition and calibration. Ensures the quality of drinking water. Disinfects lines; maintains and replaces fire hydrants; maintains and installs blow off valves used to flush water to maintain quality. Maintains and services wastewater lift stations. Locates and marks water lines, sewer lines, and any other lines associated with the utility. Provides customer service. Connects and disconnects service and identifies and resolves service problems. Performs tests on meters and other components. Delivers delinquency notices. Assists with maintenance and repairs of the water and wastewater treatment facilities. Performs warehouse work including organizing and inventorying equipment and supplies. Performs a variety of housekeeping duties. Ensures a safe and organized working environment. Follows safety rules and guidelines.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
Assists with the maintenance of PLUS vehicles and equipment. Responds to work during a declared state of disaster. Performs other duties as directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must hold or obtain a high School Diploma or GED for eligibility to train towards certification as a Water Distribution System Operator Level 3 by Florida DEP Individuals who do not possess the certification may be hired with the understanding the certification must be obtained within an agreed upon time frame. Mechanically inclined, desired. On the job training available; must have a willing disposition to gain the following knowledge and skills:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES
Knowledge of the operation and design of water distribution systems. Knowledge of the materials, methods, and repair techniques, for hydrants, pumps, valves various types of pipe. Knowledge of use of excavation construction equipment and tools used in work activities. Knowledge of proper procedures used in the maintenance and repair of hand and power tools. Knowledge of safety principles as related to excavation and repair of water system components Ability to excavate ground and properly lay pipe and install valves and hydrants. Ability to repair and maintain valves, pipes, pumps, and hydrants. Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to read maps and diagrams. Ability to read water meters and pressure recorder devices. Ability to prepare and maintain records Ability to operate pick-up trucks, backhoes and other equipment Ability to deal with customers in a professional manner.
HOURS OF WORK
PLUS Office, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday•Friday.
ANTICIPATED STARTING PAY
Minimum $16.00 per hour and maximum rate of pay depends upon experience. This is a full-time hourly position that includes County medical benefits and State Retirement.
