Job Description

Overview PF Galleries is seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented individual to be a leader in our fine art restoration studio. This position will involve overseeing and executing the processes of painting, art frame and object restoration according to industry conservation standards and needs of the clientele. The Restoration Specialist will work with the lead Framing Specialist with some aspects of conservation mounting and framing of artwork. Also involved are contributing to the production processes of art and design projects that PF makes, including various material finishing techniques. Prior art restoration experience is required. Art framing or installation experience is desirable but not mandatory. This position is for a 1099 independent contractor. Responsibilities Assess the condition of an artwork or other objects, for the purpose of restoring and reassembling them, including designing and fabricating any missing parts to bring back their original look and/or function. Plan and execute restoration treatments, such as cleaning, stabilization, inpainting, gilding, consolidation of materials, and structural repair. Create detailed records on completed as well as ongoing operations, with information such as the current condition of pieces, restoration techniques utilized, options offered for treatment, etc. Estimate and share the cost of restoring an artwork with clients, as well as the timeline possible. Collaborate with industry specialists and clients to determine appropriate restoration approaches. Advise and execute on preventive conservation. Requirements BFA in Painting or a closely related field; experience in textiles, sculpture or related disciplines. Minimum of 2 years hands-on restoration/conservation experience. Proven experience with a strong portfolio demonstrating restoration or conservation work. Knowledge of color theory, visual design principles, and production design methodologies. Familiarity with museum practices related to art preservation as well as experience working within cultural institutions is highly desirable. Ability to handle delicate materials with precision while adhering to safety standards; excellent attention to detail is essential. Excellent project management skills and ability to give direction to team members. Good communication skills, ability to explain technical choices to clients. Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a diverse team. Able to do light and somewhat strenuous labor, including working with power tools, lifting heavy pieces and climbing ladders.
Preferred Skills:
Familiarity with a variety of fine art media, including oil paint, acrylic and flash paint, acrylic/lucite, ceramic, wood, plaster, textile, stone and more. The ability to identify the style and media of artwork. A basic working knowledge of art history. Gilding and toning of picture frames. Paint color matching. Accurate measuring with tape measure and ruler. Digital photography, word processing and communication.
