Environmental Field Technician / Total Loss Inventory Specialist Job Description The Environmental Field Technician / Total Loss Inventory Specialist supports residential and commercial restoration projects involving water, smoke, and other catastrophic losses. In this role, you conduct on-site inspections, create precise room-by-room inventories of damaged or destroyed contents, and document all necessary details to support insurance claims, restoration planning, and clear client communication. You work closely with restoration teams and use specialized software to ensure accurate, timely, and well-organized records for every project. Responsibilities Conduct on-site inspections of residential and commercial properties following total loss or major loss events. Create detailed room-by-room inventories of damaged or destroyed contents, including furniture, personal property, appliances, electronics, décor, and specialty items. Accurately document item descriptions, quantities, condition, age, and materials for all affected contents. Capture and organize supporting photos and detailed notes required for insurance claims and restoration planning. Utilize inventory and claims software platforms to input, manage, and update contents data efficiently and accurately. Coordinate closely with restoration technicians, project managers, and estimators to ensure inventories support overall project scopes and timelines. Ensure all inventories and related documentation are completed, reviewed, and submitted accurately and on time. Maintain organized digital records and job files for each project to support audits, claim reviews, and client inquiries. Support loss mitigation, environmental remediation, and restoration activities by providing clear and reliable contents information. Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high standards of accuracy and documentation quality. Essential Skills 1-3 years of experience in contents inventory, insurance claims support, or restoration, mitigation, or loss recovery. Hands-on experience in restoration, mitigation, environmental services, or environmental field work. Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in documentation and data entry. Ability to work comfortably in damaged or loss-affected environments, including water, smoke, and other catastrophic loss sites. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously in a field-based role. Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, tablets, and mobile applications. Proficiency in data entry and digital recordkeeping. Valid California driver's license and reliable transportation for travel to job sites. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with restoration, construction, or environmental remediation projects. Familiarity with inventory and claims software platforms or similar digital tools used in restoration and insurance environments. Background in loss mitigation or environmental services. Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with technicians, project managers, estimators, and clients. Organizational skills to maintain structured digital files and job documentation. Ability to adapt to changing site conditions and varying project scopes. Work Environment This is a field-based role that requires regular travel to job sites across Ventura County and surrounding areas. You spend much of your time on-site at residential and commercial properties that have experienced water, smoke, or other catastrophic losses. The work involves standing, walking, and occasionally lifting light items while navigating damaged structures and loss-affected environments. You use tablets, mobile apps, and computers to complete inventories and maintain digital records. Work hours are primarily standard business hours, with occasional evening or weekend assignments depending on loss response needs. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Santa Barbara, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
