Candidates must be able to perform skilled and specialized automotive, diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG) and hydraulic systems repair work. Job Description Under general supervision, performs a variety of general, skilled or semi-skilled duties in the servicing, repair, and adjustment of automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, forklifts and other related specialized equipment powered by gasoline, diesel fuel, and compressed natural gas (CNG); and does related work as assigned.
Duties/Responsibilities Class Characteristics:
Equipment Mechanics perform journey level mechanic work and are expected to perform assigned activities without detailed instruction as to specific procedures to be followed.
Essential Functions:
Examine and locate mechanical defects in a wide variety of vehicles and construction equipment, forklifts; diagnose, troubleshoot, and determine the extent of necessary repairs. Perform major mechanical repairs; disassemble, repair, and replace worn parts; fit new parts, and adjust hydraulic, water and fuel pumps, carburetors and fuel injectors, governors, starting motors, clutches, differentials, brakes, and steering gear. Tune up engines; take compression tests; repair standard and electronic ignition systems and adjust timing and valves; replace or adjust emission control systems; and install new or rebuilt engines. Overhaul hydraulic, booster, and vacuum systems; and rewire and recondition electrical systems. Service, repair, small gasoline engines, pumps, and miscellaneous equipment and tools. Keep records of time, materials, parts, and work performed. Interact with co-workers at all levels in the organization in a collaborative and customer service-oriented manner. Maintain prompt and regular attendance. Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job duties of the position.
Knowledge of:
Techniques and methods of overhauling and repairing gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and related components, including engines, carburetors, and electrical systems. Theory, care, and operation of gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engines and mechanical components for the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment. Methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the trade and their use in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment. Preventive maintenance inspection methods.
Ability to:
Understand and follow verbal and written directions. Prepare simple records such as completing work orders. Work safely and efficiently. Deal tactfully and courteously with internal and external customers.
Education:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. (required).
Experience:
Three years of experience as an automotive, truck or equipment mechanic.
Licenses/Certifications:
Possess and maintain a valid Class A California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
Training/Safety Requirements:
This position is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing. Special Requirements Possess a valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record. DMV printout required prior to employment. The Equipment Mechanic must provide his/her own journeyman set of hand tools and a tool box. Receive satisfactory results from a background investigation, a physical examination, which includes a drug screen, and an administrative review.

Lifting over 50 pounds, with frequent lifting, pushing, and/or carrying of objects weighing over 25 lbs.
Reaching:
Reaching above the shoulders to place and/or retrieve objects.

Ability to walk for prolonged periods of time (usually a minimum of two or more hours per day)
Standing:
Ability to stand with little movement for long periods of time (usually a minimum of two or more hours per day)
Agility:
Ability to move quickly and easily, often including the ability to crawl, stoop or bend.
