JOB The County of Riverside seeks candidates to fill positions throughout Riverside County. A list of eligible candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies. The County of Riverside's TLMA Transportation Department has an opportunity for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic located in Riverside.
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing major and minor mechanical preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and overhaul/repairs on heavy-duty gasoline and diesel-powered construction equipment, including Dozers (up to D8T), 950 Loaders, Grinders, Graders, and various other construction equipment and trucks. The mechanic will also assist the Maintenance Unit as needed. This role involves diagnosing and repairing equipment either in the field—often under adverse weather conditions—or in a garage facility, as well as determining whether the equipment can be repaired on-site or must be towed.
Competitive Candidates Will Have:
Experience in the repair and overhaul of off-road heavy construction equipmentExperience using CAT ET and Cummins Insite diagnostic programsExperience using ASSET Works or similar maintenance tracking systems.
Possession of a valid California or out of state Commercial Class A or B Driver's License with a Tanker endorsement and no Air Brake restriction.
Schedule:
4/10, Monday through Thursday (weekend and holiday work may be required based on departmental needs).The selected candidate must supply their own tools and be willing to travel to various locations throughout Riverside County. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is the entry-level classification in the Heavy Equipment Mechanic series and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is distinguished from the Senior Heavy Equipment Mechanic classification by the latter's ability to work in a lead capacity over other shop personnel.

The Transportation Department is responsible for planning, designing, funding, building, operating and maintaining all roads, bridges, and transportation facilities within the unincorporated County territory.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical failures and defects in trucks, graders, tractors, skip loaders, backhoes, rollers, truck cranes, stationary motors, power sweepers, and other equipment.
- Adjust, repair, replace, or overhaul a variety of diesel and automotive engines, transmissions, clutches, rear ends, differentials, transfer cases, hydraulic brake systems, axles, pumps, injectors, carburetors, final drives, sprockets, rollers, and truck and steering systems.
- Diagnose and repair electrical defects; repair or replace starting motors, generators, and ignition systems; grind valves, rebores and resleeves cylinders; repair and overhaul compressors.
- Perform complete fabricating and repairing of construction equipment and trucks; perform complete tune-up on construction equipment and trucks.
- Complete time and material records; may be assigned to act as a team leader on difficult and complex repair jobs.
