Job Description

Job Summary Doolittle Construction is seeking a Senior Traveling Field Mechanic based in Sacramento, California to support our road maintenance and slurry seal operations across California, Oregon, and Washington. This position primarily travels with field crews during the construction season, providing on-site troubleshooting, service calls, and repairs to keep equipment operational and minimize downtime. During the off-season, the mechanic will assist with fleet maintenance, rebuilds, and preventative maintenance in the shop. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently in the field, responding to equipment issues on active job sites, and supporting crews operating specialized road maintenance equipment.
Travel required:
Approximately 7-9 months per year Work alongside road construction crews across
CA, OR, WA 1-2
months per year based in the Sacramento shop during off-season Overnight travel required during construction season Key Responsibilities Field Service & Repairs Respond to service calls and equipment breakdowns on active job sites Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues Perform field repairs on trucks, trailers, and road construction equipment Coordinate with operations and superintendents to minimize downtime Preventative Maintenance Conduct scheduled maintenance on fleet equipment Inspect equipment for safety and operational readiness Maintain service records and maintenance documentation Equipment Supported Slurry and microsurfacing trucks Emulsion distributors Chip spreaders Rollers Brooms Water trucks Support trucks and trailers Shop Support (Off-Season) Assist with equipment rebuilds and winter maintenance Prepare fleet for upcoming construction season Perform inspections, overhauls, and preventative maintenance Qualifications Required Experience performing field repairs on construction or heavy equipment Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and hydraulic systems Comfortable working independently in field environments Valid driver's license (CDL preferred but not required) Willingness to travel extensively during construction season Preferred Experience supporting road construction or pavement maintenance equipment Familiarity with slurry seal or microsurfacing equipment (Bergkamp, BearCat, etc.) Welding or fabrication skills Experience with service truck operations Benefits $40 - $50 per hour (DOE) Overtime available Company-paid hotel during travel Per diem while traveling Company service truck Fuel card Medical / dental / vision insurance Why Join Doolittle Construction Doolittle Construction is a leading road preservation contractor operating throughout the western United States. Pay:
$40.00 - $50.00 per hour
