DEFINITION
Under the general supervision of the Field Foreman and/or the General Manager, Sewer District Vehicle Mechanic maintains, diagnoses, and repairs the district's fleet, including heavy trucks (dump, sewer jet, hydro-vacuum), light vehicles, and construction equipment (backhoes, loaders), performing everything from oil changes and tune-ups to major engine overhauls and hydraulic/electrical system repairs, often involving welding, fabrication, and emergency on-call response for critical sewer system equipment.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Diagnoses, maintains, and repairs a diverse fleet of heavy equipment and trucks, including diesel engines, hydraulics, and specialized sewer cleaning/inspection vehicles (like jetters, vacuum trucks, CCTV vans). Duties involve routine preventive maintenance (oil, lubrication), complex mechanical/electrical repairs, welding, operating various tools, and sometimes driving equipment, often requiring CDL licenses, working with hazardous materials, and responding to emergencies
OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES
Diagnostics & Repair:
Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing major and minor issues on gasoline/diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems.
Preventive Maintenance:
Performing oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, and scheduled servicing on trucks, excavators, loaders, and other district vehicles.
Specialized Equipment:
Maintaining sewer jet trucks, CCTV inspection vehicles, pumps, lift stations, and other collection system equipment.
Fabrication/Welding:
Using welding equipment for repairs and modifications.
Record Keeping:
Documenting all maintenance and repair activities, logs, and inventory.
Required Skills & EnvironmentTools:
Proficiency with hand/power tools, multi-meters, welding gear.
Licenses:
Often requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements (tanker, air brakes).
Physical Demands:
Heavy lifting, climbing, working in confined spaces, and exposure to unpleasant elements (sewage, fumes, noise, weather).
Conditions:
Working with hazardous materials (sewage, electrical hazards).
Ability to:
Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill. Maintain a variety of shop and repair records. Maintain a vehicle log. Maintain a running inventory of shop tools and equipment. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Mechanic is required to spend all work hours at the District Shop, leaving only when required to do field work on District equipment; this is with the approval of the Operations Manager and/or the General Manager.
  • Replace or repair faulty parts, including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering and mechanisms, related parts, and equipment.
Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches. Tune up engines, replace ignition parts, clean and adjust carburetors. Repair and replace such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches. Diagnose and repair computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering, and cooling systems. Repair, adjust, and replace brake systems, including disc, hydraulic, and air brakes. Keep the shop area clean and in a safe condition.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:

  • Clean Driving Record
  • Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities for qualifying.
Some experience performing duties comparable to a journey-level equipment mechanic, preferably including practical experience in the maintenance of both diesel- and gas-powered equipment. Completion of formal or informal training at a level which provides the ability to read and write at a level required by the job, including specialized training in themaintenance and repair of gas- and diesel-powered equipment.
License or Certificate:
Must possess a valid California Class "C" Driver's License with the ability to obtain a California Class "A" Driver's License within two (2) years. (Valid California Class "A" Driver's License Preferred)
  • Preferred Mechanic Certifications in Heavy Equipment Diagnostics and Repair

State laws are in place, which attempt to eliminate any action by a Board member or the SCSD that may reflect a conflict of interest. The Sewer Maintenance Mechanic is to adhere to all applicable Conflict of Interest laws.
