This position will primarily be based in Calhan Please be advised this position may close without advance notice, should we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications. Performs preventive maintenance services, inspections, and minor repairs on medium and heavy vehicles, construction equipment, attachments, and auxiliary equipment. Assists in major repairs under close supervision. This position is part of the Technician, Medium & Heavy career progression series, which includes Technician II, Medium & Heavy, Technician III, Medium & Heavy, and Senior Technician, Medium & Heavy. An employee is eligible to advance to the next position within the series when the employee has met the criteria for advancement as notated within the job description and has received a recommendation from the Hiring Authority. Employment is subject to the terms, conditions, and policies detailed in the Personnel Policies Manual (PPM). This position requires regular in-person presence as an essential job function. Essential Duties/Responsibilities Performs preventive maintenance services in accordance with Fleet Management Division's service checklists. Performs repairs on all vehicles, medium/heavy equipment, attachments, and auxiliary equipment, including engines, suspensions, and steering components in the garage(s) or in the field. Uses various types of diagnostic equipment to accurately identify malfunctions. Responsible for repairing HVAC, hydraulic, and air systems. Upon certification, performs DOT and emissions inspections. Inputs accurate and detailed descriptions of work performed into the computer and tracks daily work activities. Responsible for the security and authorized use of assigned computer(s). Ensures work area is kept clean, organized, and that other shop areas are organized to prevent accidents/injuries as required. Services and repairs vehicles, equipment, and attachments to manufacturer standards, Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations (FMCSR), and Fleet Management Standard Operating Procedures (FMSOP). Responds to on-call after hours and El Paso County emergencies. Performs other duties as required.
Additional Technician III:
Performs minor repairs to "Yellow Iron" equipment such as graders, loaders, and backhoes independently and major repairs under close supervision. Provides assistance and instruction to peers as needed.
Supervision Exercised:
This classification does not have supervisory authority and requires no supervision or direction of others.
Supervision Received:
Receives intermittent supervision. This classification normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. Regular direction, guidance, and coaching from supervisor is expected. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance reviewed periodically. Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Must provide own basic tools to perform essential job functions. Knowledge of and ability to perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on medium/heavy vehicles and construction equipment. Knowledge of personal and shop tools; ability to effectively and safely operate maintenance equipment and tools to prevent accidents and injuries. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to perform assisted diagnosis of vehicles and equipment using various diagnostic equipment and techniques. Ability to read and understand technical and parts manuals in electronic and hard copy format. Must observe and follow safety procedures and precautions. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Ability to communicate and work effectively with County staff, customers, and the public. Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computers, printers, and copiers. Ability to complete Individualized Development Plan (IDP). Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Technician III:
Ability to diagnose vehicle and equipment faults including electrical, hydraulic, steering, and suspension systems using various diagnostic equipment and techniques. Required Education and Experience Minimum two years of vehicle and equipment mechanical experience. Any equivalent combination of related education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.
Technician III:
Minimum four years of vehicle and equipment mechanical experience, one of which must have been in a professional setting. Minimum one year of experience maintaining construction equipment. Licenses/Certificates Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a Colorado State Diesel Emission Inspector Certification or obtain within six months of employment. ASE (Medium/Heavy Truck) Certification preferred.
Technician III:
Must obtain a Colorado Class B or higher Commercial Driver's Permit within six months of employment. Must obtain and maintain Colorado Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one year of employment; CDL training is provided by El Paso County. Tanker endorsement required within ninety days of obtaining CDL or within ninety days of employment for current CDL holders. Must possess and maintain a Colorado State Diesel Emission Inspector Certification or obtain within six months of employment. Pre-Employment Requirements Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination. Work Conditions Duties are typically performed in a shop or garage environment; must be able to operate in the field under remote conditions. May be exposed to hazardous materials, such as antifreeze, lubricants, solvents, corrosives, fuels, and vapors. Work may be performed in hazardous situations including close proximity to moving vehicles/equipment and traffic or recovering vehicles/equipment and in adverse weather conditions. Work is performed with potentially dangerous equipment and tools. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 75 lbs. Regular work schedule may include weekends and working after hours or modified shifts. Responds to on-call after hours El Paso County emergencies.
