This role is directly responsible for 5 mechanic positions that support the Tipton sub-district. Resposible for all Fleet repairs and maintenance of many different types of equipment from plow trucks, to road work equipment down to passenger vehicles and chainsaws. Persons applying to this role should be strong leaders with a mechanical background preferred. The ability to communicate and make decisions on the fly is key. Position is 7.5 hours per day with Snow event coverage in the winter months that are 12 hr shifts, until the snow event is over. There is overtime avaible in the winter and when needed in off winter months.Location:

This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $27.29 but may be commensurate with education and work experience.Mechanic Positions:
Candidates with a current CDL and endorsements required by the district will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements required by the district and will then earn an additional $1 per hour. CDL training provided onsite by certified INDOT staff. INDOT also provides a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 per year for full-time Mechanic positions for the purchase, replacement and repair of tools required for maintenance and repair activities related to INDOT's fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance equipment and all other fleet items. A Day in theLife:
The essential functions of this role are as follows: Diagnoses electronic engine control systems (e.g., engine control modules, anti-lock brake systems, medium and heavy-duty automatic transmission engine control modules) using scan tools, laptop computers, and available software. Repairs systems using up-to-date diagnostic equipment. Identifies, troubleshoots, and repairs or replaces engine electronic sensors. Troubleshoots, repairs, and calibrates central hydraulic system control units used in highway salt applications. Test drives a variety of motorized equipment (e.g., dump trucks, backhoes, tandem axle dump trucks, front-end loaders, and combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001lbs. or more, where GVWR of the vehicles being towed is in excess of 10,000 lbs, etc.). Repairs, rebuilds, and/or replaces minor and major parts (e.g., electrical system components, alternators, water or fuel pumps, clutches, brake systems). Adjusts valves and performs preventative maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment. Performs miscellaneous mechanic work (e.g., body repair work, repair or replace tires, cleans or replaces diesel injectors, provides service and repair of vehicles and equipment on emergency basis). Schedules maintenance and repair of equipment. Maintains repair or service records. Attends training schools. Updates shop manuals and parts books. Operate welding equipment (e.g., acetylene torch and welding equipment) to heat, shape and weld machinery and equipment. Operates computer to enter, edit, and retrieve data from computer systems. Performs inventories of machinery and heavy equipment, and orders and picks up parts and supplies. Cleans garage area, equipment, and tools. Mows grass, operates snowplow, and operates tow truck. Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following: Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment. Working knowledge of appropriate safety practices associated with the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, vehicles, and/or motorized equipment. Extensive knowledge of heavy and light-duty vehicle and equipment repair. Extensive knowledge of hydraulics and how to properly diagnosis and repair. Ability to repair all types of equipment that are required to perform various types of highway maintenance activities such as snow plowing, paving, chip spreading, excavating, traffic line painting, traffic signal repair, and traffic sign replacement. Skill in operating hand & power tools related to the repair & maintenance of vehicles & equipment. Ability to understand the system of mechanical procedures. Ability to use welding and steel-cutting equipment. Ability to carry out oral and written instructions and to complete records and reports. Ability to use repair manuals and parts catalogs. Ability to follow directions and work as a part of a team. Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time. Must provide own tools and agency-approved steel-toe boots. A degree is not required. However, at least 5+ years of experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered. Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
