Job Title:
Garage Mechanic Job Description The Garage Mechanic performs skilled maintenance, service, and repair on diesel- and gas-powered trucks and equipment, working both in the shop and in the field. This role focuses on diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and air system issues and ensuring all vehicles and equipment operate safely, reliably, and in accordance with factory specifications. Responsibilities Inspect, diagnose, and repair electrical, hydraulic, and air systems on trucks, heavy equipment, and related machinery. Inspect engines and other critical components to ensure they are in proper operating condition. Use hand tools and power tools, including pneumatic wrenches, cordless tools, welding equipment, and hoists, to perform repairs and maintenance. Examine and adjust protective guards and specified safety devices to ensure safe operation of vehicles and equipment. Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking and replacing batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery. Test drive trucks and heavy equipment to diagnose malfunctions and to verify that repairs have been completed correctly. Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications. Assess defective equipment and diagnose malfunctions using test instruments such as multimeters, schematics, and pressure gauges. Repair or replace wiring, lights, and instrument panels on vehicles and equipment. Diagnose and repair vehicle heating and cooling systems to ensure operator comfort and equipment reliability. Support general facilities maintenance needs as they relate to shop equipment and tools. Perform electrical troubleshooting on equipment and systems as needed. Carry out other related duties as assigned to support safe and efficient operation of the fleet and garage. Essential Skills Proven mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience servicing diesel- and gas-powered trucks and heavy equipment. Strong ability to inspect, diagnose, and repair electrical, hydraulic, and air systems on vehicles and equipment. Proficiency in using hand tools and power tools, including pneumatic wrenches, cordless tools, welding equipment, and hoists. Capability to perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks and replacements, and equipment lubrication. Experience test driving trucks and heavy equipment to diagnose issues and confirm proper operation after repairs. Ability to read and interpret schematics and use test instruments such as multimeters and pressure gauges for troubleshooting. Skill in inspecting and verifying dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure compliance with factory specifications. Competence in repairing or replacing wiring, lights, and instrument panels. Ability to diagnose and repair vehicle heating and cooling systems. Facilities maintenance experience relevant to a garage or shop environment. Electrical troubleshooting skills applicable to vehicles, equipment, and shop systems. Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and commitment to quality workmanship. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a busy garage or fleet maintenance environment. Maintaining both diesel and gasoline engines. Familiarity with protective guards and safety devices on commercial vehicles and heavy equipment. Comfort using welding equipment for basic repair and fabrication tasks. Ability to manage multiple repair tasks and prioritize work in a high-demand setting. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Work Environment This role is primarily based indoors in a garage-style environment that can be hot, especially during the summer months. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Louisville, KY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
