Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws. Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights. Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system. Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges. Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment. Performs emergency spot repairs. Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities. Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment. Reads and interprets schematics, diagrams and blueprints. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience :

Equipment Mechanic I:

2 years;

Equipment Mechanic II:

4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience. Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses and Certifications :

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of employment. Mtr Veh St Inspector-Licensed, if performing State safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license.

Considerable knowledge of Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance Vehicle air conditioning and heating systems Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes Some knowledge of State procurement guidelines for parts purchases and P-card use Proficient skill in Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word Some skill in Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
