As a Mobile Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will be based out of our Ironton, MN location and travel to other CW Company facilities throughout the northern region as needed. Travel is completed during regular work hours using a fully equipped company service truck. The purpose of this role is to maintain, diagnose, and repair the equipment that powers our operations—all with safety at the forefront. You'll work on material handlers, yard equipment (forklifts, skid steers, excavators, loaders, etc.), and trailers addressing mechanical issues across hydraulic and pneumatic systems, engines, transmissions, suspensions, exhausts, brakes, electrical, and cooling systems. This role is critical in preventing breakdowns, responding to field service needs, and ensuring equipment meets performance and safety standards. Whether in the shop or the field, you'll work independently and be trusted to deliver reliable, high-quality repairs that keep operations running.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Safely follow OSHA standards, company policies, and manufacturer protocols when performing all diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance. Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain material handlers, yard equipment (forklifts, skid steers, excavators, loaders, etc.), and trailers for mechanical issues such as hydraulic and pneumatic systems, engines, transmissions, suspensions, exhausts, brakes, electrical, and cooling systems. Use hand tools, multimeters, and testing instruments to identify faults and restore performance. Service onboard automatic greasing systems, track system performance, and replace faulty components as needed. Operate and inspect repaired equipment to verify safety, compliance, and function before return to service. Collaborate with the Mechanic Supervisor to report discrepancies, assist in parts inventory, and recommend long-term repair solutions. Maintain accurate records of completed work, inspections, parts usage, and maintenance schedules. Uphold high standards—ensure all work areas are clean, organized, and free from hazards. Continuously expand technical knowledge through training, trade resources, and hands-on learning. High school diploma or GED required Valid driver's license, Class A or B CDL preferred 3-5 years proven ability to diagnose and repair systems on material handlers, yard equipment, and trailers 3-5 years experience with diagnostic tools, hydraulic schematics, and testing procedures Effective and responsive communication skills with management Decisive prioritization of tasks Skillset to provide quality and timely completion of tasks Dedicated documentation and organizational skills Driven work ethic, self motivation, sense of responsible independence on the job Acute attention to safety Detail oriented Physical Demands Mobile Heavy Equipment Mechanics must be able to safely climb in and out of heavy equipment and trucks multiple times per shift and work in physically tight, elevated, or awkward positions while performing repairs. The position involves standing, kneeling, bending, reaching, and walking for extended periods on uneven or outdoor surfaces. Candidates must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds routinely while handling tools, parts, or equipment. Visual and auditory acuity are necessary for inspecting components, identifying mechanical issues, and communicating with team members around moving machinery. The work is often performed in varying weather conditions and will include exposure to loud noise, oil, grease, and dust. A high level of situational awareness, physical stamina, and adherence to safe body mechanics is essential to succeed in this hands-on, field-based role. Work Environment This position operates in both indoor and outdoor industrial environments, including active recycling yards, maintenance shops, and on-site service calls. Mechanics are expected to work year-round in all seasons, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, and must remain alert to vehicle and foot traffic at all times. The role involves regular movement between equipment, climbing on and off machinery, and performing hands-on tasks in tight or elevated spaces. Proper use of company-provided personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times to ensure individual and team safety. A safety-first mindset, adaptability, and situational awareness are essential to success in this fast-paced and task-driven environment.
