Job Summary/Scope Supervises and coordinates all phases of maintenance and repair for all heavy and medium duty equipment, including motor graders, wheel loaders, excavators, and Class 1-8 trucks; specialty equipment, including street sweepers, slurry seal trucks, vacuum sewer basin cleaners, and paint striping machines, and all other motorized equipment for the department, with particular emphasis on trouble-shooting difficult and unusual mechanical problems. Direct supervisory responsibilities over 7-person shop. Assists in budget preparation. Skills in Microsoft Office required and knowledge of asset/fleet management software preferred. Supervisory Responsibility Integral to the position of Chief Master Mechanic is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching, training, guiding, evaluating, correcting and, if necessary, disciplining. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    MAINTAINS
    asset/fleet management software and preventive maintenance program for all department vehicles and motorized equipment and ensures that all proper forms and asset/fleet management records are completed.
    • REVIEWS operators repair and maintenance requests and prioritizes all maintenance and repair jobs to be performed to ensure that priorities are met.
    SCHEDULES
    normal maintenance of vehicles and small engines.
      SCHEDULES
      emergency maintenance and repair of seasonal priority vehicles.
      • SUPERVISES and coordinates the activities of employees engaged in garage and automotive service work.
      OVERSEES
      maintenance and repair of a fleet of nearly 300 vehicles and equipment; over 100 chainsaws, snow blowers, tampers, and other small, powered equipment, all with a value of over $9 million dollars.
      • PROCURES or directs procurement of all parts, supplies and equipment required for maintenance operations and inventory stock for seasonal equipment, consistent with established policy.
      PERFORMS
      skilled mechanical work on specialized department equipment
        EVALUATES
        performance of subordinate employees. Other Duties and Responsibilities

        all other related duties as assigned. Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
        • SKILLS in heavy and medium duty vehicles and equipment, construction equipment, light truck and automobile mechanics, welding, vehicle maintenance, supervision and interpersonal relationships.
        KNOWLEDGE
        of diesel engines, hydraulic systems and vehicle electrical systems.
        • MUST have a good knowledge of computerized fleet maintenance system.
        • ABILITY to plan and prioritize work, communicate effectively orally and in writing, maintain accurate and detailed records, understand and follow verbal and written instructions and estimate costs, materials and time required for repair work.
        • FIVE to seven years prior experience in related field preferred.
        • MUST be able to obtain ASE Certification within probationary period.
        MISSOURI
        Safety Inspector's Mechanic Permit required along with a Valid Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement required.
          REQUIRED
          to be on-call and/or carry a pager and respond to emergencies as needed. Materials and Equipment Directly Used Uses a variety of equipment including hydraulic jacks, lift devices and safety stands. Also uses feed and stick welders, grinders, acetylene torches, presses, hydraulic and electric testing equipment, hydraulic hose crimp machine, paint and body shop equipment, tire and tire repair equipment and other related equipment. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required. Working Environment/Physical Requirements Work is performed under a variety of conditions ranging from an indoor setting with a controlled environment to an outdoor setting with extreme weather conditions. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Other physical activity includes bending, stooping, walking, climbing and reaching. Must be able to routinely lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds, occasional lift objects weighing as much as 75 pounds or assist in lifting objects in excess of 75 pounds. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor Employee Behavior and Conduct City employees shall conduct themselves in a professional manner and shall exhibit and extend such professional conduct appropriate for the circumstances to those with whom they come into contact both internally and externally during the performance of their duties. Examples of professional conduct include, but are not limited to, being communicative, informative, fair, honest and respectful. Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree in related field preferred and three to five years in a related field required. All applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.
