Job Title:
Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic Job Summary:
A Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and servicing heavy construction, mining, agricultural, or industrial equipment at customer job sites. The mechanic travels to various locations to perform inspections, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, and ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently. Key Responsibilities Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic equipment problems. Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled service on heavy equipment. Repair engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes, steering systems, and other components. Use diagnostic software, testing equipment, and service manuals to identify faults. Conduct safety inspections and ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards. Travel to customer locations to provide on-site repairs and emergency service. Complete work orders, service reports, and maintenance records accurately. Communicate repair recommendations and equipment status to customers and supervisors. Maintain service vehicles, tools, and equipment in good working condition. Order and manage replacement parts as needed. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED Experience repairing heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, cranes, graders, or agricultural machinery. Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrain components. Ability to read schematics, technical manuals, and diagnostic reports. Valid driver's license; CDL may be preferred. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Physical Requirements Frequently lift up to 50 pounds or more. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces for extended periods. Ability to respond to emergency service calls, including occasional overtime and weekends. Preferred Skills Manufacturer certifications. Welding and fabrication experience. Computer and diagnostic software proficiency. Strong customer service and communication skills. Sample Salary Range In the United States, Heavy Equipment Field Mechanics typically earn $55,000-$95,000+ per year, with experienced mechanics and those working in specialized industries often earning more through overtime and field service premiums.
