In this role, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining complex network infrastructures across diverse environments. Your expertise will ensure seamless connectivity, robust security, and high availability for our clients' IT systems. As a self-employed contractor, you will have the flexibility to manage multiple projects, deliver exceptional network support, and drive innovative solutions that meet evolving technological demands. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work independently while making a significant impact on enterprise and small business networks worldwide. Responsibilities Install, configure, and troubleshoot network hardware including routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs, and load balancers to ensure optimal performance. Manage and support LAN (Local Area Network), WAN (Wide Area Network), MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), and SD-WAN environments for various clients. Implement and maintain network security protocols such as Cisco ISE (Identity Services Engine), PKI (Public Key Infrastructure), IDS (Intrusion Detection Systems), and firewalls like Cisco ASA. Conduct vulnerability assessments using tools like SolarWinds, Splunk, and PRTG to identify potential risks and recommend remediation strategies. Perform system hardening, network installation, configuration of DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), DNS (Domain Name System), GPO (Group Policy Objects), and LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol). Support virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere, ESXi, and Citrix to optimize resource utilization and high availability. Automate routine tasks using scripting languages like Bash (Unix shell), PowerShell, Python, and Ansible to streamline operations. Monitor network performance with tools like SolarWinds or PRTG; troubleshoot issues related to TCP/IP protocols, routing protocols such as
OSPF, EIGRP, BGP
; and optimize network architecture for scalability. Assist in the deployment of cloud-based solutions on AWS or Azure; configure VPNs for secure remote access; and ensure compliance with ITIL standards for service management. Experience Proven experience working as a freelance or self-employed Network Technician or in a similar contractor role supporting diverse IT infrastructure projects. Strong knowledge of computer networking concepts including LAN/WAN design, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), network protocols (TCP/IP, UDP), VLANs, VPNs (IPsec, SSL VPNs), and high availability configurations. Hands-on experience with Cisco routers/switches, Juniper devices, Meraki solutions, openSUSE/Linux distributions such as Debian or Ubuntu for system administration tasks. Familiarity with SAN/NFS storage systems; managing network security through encryption standards; implementing SSO solutions; and performing vulnerability assessments using industry-standard tools. Experience with operating systems including Windows Server environments, macOS, BSD variants like Solaris or FreeBSD; managing Active Directory environments; and supporting UNIX/Linux-based systems such as CentOS or Ubuntu. Knowledge of DevOps practices including virtualization with VMware ESXi/vSphere; containerization; scripting for automation; and managing network infrastructure in cloud environments like AWS or Azure. Ability to work independently on multiple projects while maintaining excellent communication skills; adapt quickly to new technologies; follow SDLC processes; and uphold best practices in system hardening and network security.
