Job Description

We are currently seeking experienced HVAC Service Technicians to join our growing team. Company Overview Perfect Star Heating Cooling & Electrical is a locally owned and operated family business with over 30 years of experience in providing exceptional HVAC services to the East Bay Area. Our commitment to customer comfort and satisfaction drives us to deliver high-quality heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical solutions with honesty and expertise. Summary The HVAC Service Technician is responsible for identifying, diagnosing, and repairing issues in HVAC systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units. This technician specializes in performing troubleshooting and repairs, as well as ensuring that HVAC systems operate at peak efficiency. They must also provide exceptional customer service by explaining issues and solutions clearly.
Responsibilities:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:
Respond to service calls for HVAC systems that are malfunctioning or require repairs. Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues, such as faulty thermostats, refrigerant leaks, or non-working compressors. Use diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, pressure gauges, thermometers) to test system components, electrical wiring, and refrigerant levels.
System Repairs:
Repair or replace faulty components of HVAC systems, including motors, fans, compressors, circuit boards, sensors, and capacitors. Fix electrical issues related to wiring, fuses, control boards, and thermostats. Repair or replace broken refrigerant lines or leaking pipes. Handle issues related to system airflow (e.g., fixing clogged filters, cleaning coils, or clearing ductwork blockages).
Preventative Maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance on HVAC systems to prevent breakdowns, including cleaning filters, changing air filters, and inspecting system components. Test and calibrate systems to ensure optimal energy efficiency and performance. Inspect and clean refrigerant coils and check refrigerant charge to maintain the system's efficiency.
Customer Interaction:
Communicate clearly with customers to explain system issues, repairs needed and provide maintenance recommendations. Offer suggestions for energy-efficient solutions and upgrades. Answer any questions or concerns customers may have, providing peace of mind regarding system operation. Provide accurate estimates for repairs or replacement of parts. Explain the club memberships to the client, giving them an opportunity to join. Maintain a strong conversion rate for non-club members and ensure a high renewal rate for existing club members as agreed upon within your Position Agreement. Wear floor savers while in the client's home and maintain a neat work area when performing a repair or scheduled service.
Compliance and Safety:
Ensure that all work complies with local, state, and federal safety regulations (such as EPA standards for refrigerant handling). Follow company safety protocols when working with electrical components, high-voltage systems, refrigerants, and other hazardous materials. Maintain safe work practices to prevent injuries while working on rooftop units, in confined spaces, or with heavy equipment.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate service records, documenting system issues, repairs made, parts replaced, and labor hours spent. Complete service reports and provide customers with written or digital records of the work performed. Update work orders and report material or part shortages.
Equipment and Tool Management:
Regularly check and maintain tools and equipment to ensure they are in proper working order. Properly maintain a service vehicle stocked with necessary parts and tools for the day's jobs. Keep track of spare parts and order replacements when necessary.
Other Duties:
Participate actively in all training exercises, morning meetings and retreats. Exemplify our Core Values, Mission Statement, and "Perfect We Stand" Code of Conduct. Adhere to all company policies, including those specified in the Team Member Playbook. Maintain your truck so that it is always neat and clean on the inside and outside. The truck serves as one of the company's most effective billboards. Park it in a location that maximizes its visibility whenever possible. Maintain a clean, organized job site. Always be safety conscious both on the job and while driving.
Minimum Qualifications Education:
High school diploma/GED required
Driving Record:
Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and meet insurance requirements to operate a company vehicle.
Experience:
1+ year of experience in the HVAC trade
Licensing:
EPA 608 Certification required
Technical Skills:
Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, including heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration technologies. General knowledge of power tools and techniques for care and safe use
Electrical Knowledge:
Ability to work with electrical systems, including troubleshooting, wiring, and repairing control panels and circuit boards.
Problem-Solving:
Ability to quickly identify problems and come up with effective solutions under pressure.
Customer Service:
Excellent communication skills to explain technical issues to customers in a clear and helpful manner.
Physical Stamina:
Must be able to lift heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in cramped or high spaces for long periods. Attention to
Detail:
Ability to spot minor issues before they become larger problems, preventing costly repairs.
Time Management:
Ability to manage multiple service calls per day and complete tasks efficiently.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Physical Demands:
Climbing up and down on ladders and equipment Heavy lifting required (50-75) pounds, ladder work and tight space work required from time to time Ability to pick-up a minimum of 25 pounds consistently and carry up to 250 feet unassisted Operate handheld power tools Wear personal protective equipment Ability to work more than 40 hours per work week and up to 12 hours per day. Technicians may work during regular business hours or be on call for emergency services (e.g., nights, weekends, or holidays).
Working Environment:
Work both indoors and outdoors Would be exposed to very hot or very cold temperatures Will be in proximity to hazardous conditions, equipment, and situations Wear safety attire, such as goggles or other protective clothing Could be exposed to sounds and noise levels that are uncomfortable and distracting Will be exposed to very bright or inadequate lighting conditions Ability to climb ladders and work from roofs and scaffolding Will work around exposed contaminants Must be able to work in cramped workplaces, such as crawl spaces under floors.
