The opportunity:
The HVAC Technician is responsible for providing adequate climate control and mechanical system reliability throughout facilities through the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and kitchen equipment systems. The HVAC Technician supports the company's mission by ensuring that facilities remain safe, comfortable, energy-efficient, and operational for everyone. Essential Responsibilities HVAC, Refrigeration & Kitchen Equipment Diagnoses cause of failures and performance issues in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and kitchen equipment systems. Performs preventive maintenance on HVAC, refrigeration, exhaust, ventilation, and kitchen equipment systems. Installs, repairs, modifies, and upgrades HVAC equipment and related mechanical systems. Inspects equipment and system components to identify repair, replacement, and maintenance requirements. Repairs and replaces pumps, motors, air handlers, fan coil units, compressors, piping, controls, thermostats, and associated mechanical equipment. Fabricates specialty parts and components when replacement parts are unavailable or impractical to obtain. Maintains and services commercial kitchen equipment supporting campus dining operations. Responds to HVAC, refrigeration, and mechanical emergencies during normal and after-hours operations. Monitors and adjusts building temperatures through the facilities building automation and control systems. Maintains refrigerant systems in compliance with environmental regulations and industry standards. Transports tools, equipment, and materials necessary to complete assigned work. General Building Maintenance Assists with maintenance and repair activities involving plumbing, fire protection systems, electrical systems, and general building maintenance. Supports the facilities construction, renovation, and deferred maintenance projects. Assists with emergency response and disaster recovery efforts when necessary. Safety and Training Operates tools, vehicles, and equipment safely and in compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Follows the facilities departmental, OSHA, EPA, and industry safety standards. Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment. Participates in required safety meetings, trade-specific training, and professional development opportunities. Maintains awareness of evolving HVAC technologies, codes, and best practices. Administrative Duties Retrieves, updates, and closes work orders using the facilities work order management system. Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment performance. Assists with inventory management and procurement of HVAC parts, materials, and supplies. Maintains assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment in safe operating condition. Provides recommendations regarding equipment replacement, capital improvements, and preventive maintenance planning. Risk Management & Stewardship of the facilities Property Proactively identify, report, and resolve safety hazards and facility deficiencies. Identify code compliance concerns and report them to appropriate leadership. Protect the facilities assets from damage, theft, vandalism, and deterioration. Support the reliability and continuous operation of critical campus infrastructure. Plan and coordinate service interruptions to minimize impacts on academic and campus operations. Other Duties as Assigned Performs other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Qualifications Education Required:
High School Diploma or GED.
Highly Preferred:
Technical training or coursework in HVAC, refrigeration, mechanical systems, or related trades. Experience Minimum of five (5) years of experience in HVAC, refrigeration, and mechanical systems maintenance and repair. Experience working with commercial HVAC equipment and building mechanical systems. Experience pressurizing, evacuating, recovering, and handling refrigerants. Skills/Abilities Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and control system schematics and drawings. Knowledge of HVAC systems, refrigeration systems, building automation controls, indoor air quality, and commercial kitchen equipment. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical system failures. Basic computer skills sufficient to utilize email, building automation systems, and electronic work order software. Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
Licenses & Certifications Required:
EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification.
Required:
Refrigerant Handling Certification.
Required:
Valid California Driver's License.
Preferred:
Additional HVAC, controls, or energy management certifications. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds or more. Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and access confined spaces. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and work in physically demanding environments. Ability to work in varying weather conditions and around mechanical equipment, refrigerants, noise, and construction environments. Join Us. $32.00 - $35.00 per hour
