Full-time TITLE:
HVAC Mechanic
I QUALIFICATIONS
HS diploma or GED and preferably technical trade school with a concentration in mechanical systems to include steam and hot water boilers, refrigeration systems and exhaust systems or an equivalent of education and experience. Minimum of two years in installation, maintenance, and repair of ventilation, air-conditioning, an environmental control systems and/or electrical systems preferred. Valid North Carolina HVAC Journeyman's card preferred. Environmental Protection Agency (CFC) certification is preferred. Valid North Carolina driver's license required. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Director of Facility Support Operations and HVAC Supervisor/Leadman
SUPERVISES
Lower grade mechanics.
JOB GOAL
To perform the full range of duties associated with installation, maintenance, and repair of ventilation, air-conditioning, and environmental control systems.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Follows all rules and procedures of Carteret County Public Schools, along with state and federal regulations pertaining to school/department issues and as required by Facilities Operations. Assumes responsibility for safe and efficient operating conditions of HVAC equipment and controls and refrigeration equipment through the practice of recognized maintenance, repair and construction methods of the trade and direction from the HVAC Supervisor or Director of Facilities. Makes recommendations to HVAC Supervisor on methods or procedures regarding projects or operations. Performs preventive maintenance tasks at the direction of the HVAC Supervisor. Provides guidance and technical assistance to others. Gives clear and concise instructions. Assesses equipment and material needs and assists in the preparation of estimates, reports and requisitions as needed. Properly uses and cares for tools of the trade; troubleshoots and repairs HVAC related systems, equipment and/or components; and performs work from trade related blueprints, schematic diagrams, sketches and work orders. Properly instructs custodians and other maintenance workers on proper methods and procedure in mechanical system operations as directed by the HVAC Supervisor or Director of Facilities. Meets all schedules and deadlines in a timely fashion. Remains on-call in case of emergencies. Maintains a valid North Carolina driver's license. Follows written and verbal instructions and provides prompt feedback as requested. Performs such other duties as assigned and required by the HVAC Supervisor and Director of Facilities. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Twelve month work year/At Will/FLSA Non-Exempt. Salary based on local salary scale.
STARTING SALARY AND/OR GRADE
Grade 65
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Non-Licensed Employees.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to carry out broad verbal and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. Demonstrate considerable functional knowledge and skill in the use of a variety of tools used in the performance of HVAC work. Demonstrate functional knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment. Demonstrate considerable functional knowledge of the operation of centrifugal and reciprocal compressors. Demonstrate functional knowledge of electricity. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the operation of DDC control systems. Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and prescribe repair procedures. Ability to analyze building heating and air-conditioning requirements and recommend systems or modifications, including boilers, two-pipe, and four-pipe systems. Ability to read and work from plans, blueprints and sketches. Ability to maintain accurate records. Demonstrate functional knowledge of applicable building codes and specifications. Demonstrate functional knowledge of safety precautions of the HVAC trade. Physical ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of the job, such as walk, lift, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch, climb ladders and scaffolds, work in building crawl spaces, and key requiring repetitive motions.
