Job Description

As an HVAC Mechanic, you will perform general repairs and preventive maintenance on all heating and air conditioning systems and units while working collaboratively with higher-level mechanics and Facilities teams to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient building operations across campus. You will regularly be required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Qualifications Experience Four (4) years' experience in HVAC field and experience working on refrigeration equipment. Education Work requires an educational background normally acquired through a high school education with course work in skilled crafts, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license. Be Bold. You will apply your technical knowledge, hands-on skills, and commitment to safety to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC and refrigeration systems that directly impact comfort, energy efficiency, and operational continuity.
What You'll Do:
Perform general repairs and preventive maintenance on all air conditioner units, water coolers, split systems, heat pumps, mixing boxes, and refrigeration equipment. Clean mechanical rooms, pick up and deliver parts, assist other mechanics, and assist all higher-level mechanics in their areas of responsibility. Perform preventive maintenance on airside equipment (i.e., AHU, exhaust fan, supply fan) and waterside equipment (i.e., coils, pumps, towers). Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair DX equipment, including condensing units up to 5 tons, ice machines, freezers, and other refrigeration systems. Troubleshoot and repair hermetic, semi-hermetic, reciprocating, and scroll DX systems and chillers. Monitor temperature and pressure readings for historical purposes. Maintain and repair air handlers, adjusting airflows and temperatures to achieve energy savings and comfort levels. Dismantle malfunctioning systems, test components, and replace or adjust defective or worn parts. Screw, bolt, solder, and braze parts to assemble and repair motors, controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, pipes, pneumatic lines, refrigerant piping, and water lines. Install wiring to connect components to electric power sources and read and interpret electrical wiring diagrams. Troubleshoot, repair, and adjust pneumatic, electronic, and line voltage controls. Use the Facilities Automated Control System to locate system problems and take corrective action. Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, block diagrams, ladder diagrams, and electrical schematics. Use tools such as electrical multimeters and magnehelic gauges to determine filter efficiency. Care for, clean, maintain, install, identify, transfer, store, and properly dispose of filters; clean and maintain filter-housing areas; assist in maintaining filter inventory. Test and treat condenser and chilled water systems and add appropriate chemicals to achieve proper concentration levels. Properly add and recover refrigerant in a safe manner and fill out and maintain proper refrigerant logs in accordance with Duke and Federal guidelines. Fill out service reports, inventory forms, preventive maintenance records, and other related documentation. Properly start and stop equipment to perform maintenance activities. Perform proper alignment of sheaves, belts, couplings, and bearings. Be on call or Stand-By as described in the Local 465 agreement. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Learn and follow all safety protocols, including filter applications and workplace safety requirements. Choose Duke.   • Received training to identify the different types of filters and proper application.
  • Received training on the Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Must possess valid CFC certification.
