Overview The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.
Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a HVAC R Mechanic I for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the direction of the Supervisor, Maintenance and construction, preforms a variety of maintenance repairs and installation/replacement of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration systems, and/or system components. Assists in the work direction of other mechanics, trades helpers and mechanics of other skilled trades.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Operates, maintains, repairs and installs heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment "HVAC/R", as well as controls ancillary equipment and support systems. Ancillary equipment and support systems are inclusive of, but not limited to: controls, regulators, motors, compressors, air stations, coils, fluid/gas piping, strainers operating valves and dampers.
Responds to HVAC/R trouble calls and requests within the facilities, using hard tools, power tools, analyzing equipment and testing instruments.
Performs routine maintenance, preventive maintenance and inspections on HVAC/R equipment and related equipment/systems. Ancillary equipment and support systems are inclusive of, but not limited to: controls, regulators, motors, compressors, air stations, coils fluid/gas piping, strainers, operating valves and dampers.
Prepares, maintains and submits to the Supervisor, Maintenance and Construction requisitions for material, work orders, required records and reports, pertaining to HVAC/R equipment/systems.
Maintains daily time sheets and information pertaining to work performed and time spent.
Interprets data from the Power Plant, mechanical systems, control systems, energy management systems and shift log; taking action and making the Supervisor, Maintenance and Construction aware of the appropriate action taken, when necessary.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience Technical school diploma or an equivalent level of knowledge, plus five (5) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and installation of HVAC/R equipment, in an industrial, education and/or healthcare setting.
Certifications/Licenses Valid Driver's License is required.
Minimum requirement of Type II, EPA Certificate, 40 CFR, Part 82, Subpart F.
Must be capable of passing and maintaining the New Jersey Pesticide License Testing Requirement.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Sound knowledge of blueprint and schematic reading is required, as is through knowledge of all applicable (local, state, and national) codes.
Preferred Qualifications Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to perform physical labor without restrictions, including lifting equipment in excess of fifty (50) pounds, performing work on roofs, scaffolds and ladders.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The individual in this position may be exposed to environmental conditions such as wet or humid conditions (nonweather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airbourne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat or cold (non-weather), risk of electrical shock and vibration up to 2/3 of time; to risk of radiation less than 1/3 of the time. Moderate noise is typical for the work environment of this job.
