Position Summary The HES University HVAC Technician is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance of campus heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, chiller, and cooling tower systems. This position ensures that all HVAC equipment operates efficiently and reliably to provide a safe, comfortable, and productive environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on HVAC and refrigeration systems. Maintain and repair chilled water systems, cooling towers, pumps, air handlers, fan coil units, VAV boxes, exhaust systems, and associated controls. Monitor and maintain central plant equipment, including chillers, cooling towers, condenser water systems, and chilled water distribution systems. Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control system issues using appropriate testing equipment and tools. Perform routine water treatment inspections and coordinate corrective actions as necessary. Inspect and maintain HVAC equipment to ensure compliance with manufacturer recommendations and university standards. Respond to emergency service calls and equipment failures in a timely manner. Assist with the operation and maintenance of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and HVAC control systems. Ability to use (CMMS) systems and work order systems such as (Flowpath). Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment performance. Coordinate with contractors and vendors performing specialized HVAC services. Ensure all work is completed in accordance with OSHA, EPA, state, local, and university safety requirements. Support campus events and facility operations as needed. Participate in after-hours, weekend, and emergency call-out rotations. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough understanding of commercial HVAC systems and components. Strong working knowledge of centrifugal and screw chillers, chilled water systems, cooling towers, pumps, and heat exchangers. Ability to troubleshoot HVAC electrical, mechanical, and control systems. Understanding of refrigeration principles, psychrometrics, and HVAC system performance. Knowledge of building automation and energy management systems. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals. Familiarity with water treatment programs for cooling towers and closed-loop systems. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Excellent communication and customer service skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Technical school certification or HVAC trade school training preferred. Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience maintaining commercial HVAC systems. Experience with central plant equipment, chillers, and cooling towers required. EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification required.
