High school graduation or GED. Valid driver's license. A year of experience as an HVAC technician, either in a residential or commercial setting. Type II or Universal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification. Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in English and follow basic work instructions. Ability to perform a range of physical tasks including: standing, walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching up to 6 hours daily. Ability to sit, kneel/squat, bend/stoop, climb stairs/ladders, push/pull, twist, overhead reach for up to 4 hours daily. Ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds unassisted as needed throughout the workday. 1+ years of practical experience in repairing, maintaining, and installing air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Formal training and experience troubleshooting and repairing heat pumps, DX units, auxiliary electric heat elements, and pneumatic and electric controls. Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment and stable work history. North American Technician Excellence (NATE) service certification or a State of Texas Certified Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician.
Job Description:
The AC Mechanic II will perform maintenance and repairs on university housing buildings. The AC Mechanic will respond to work requests to repair defective units in housing facilities, perform preventive maintenance by checking building HVAC systems, and ensure that the equipment is operating (heating or cooling.
Job Duties:
Performs preventive and repair maintenance on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, steam, and electronic components of environmental control systems and equipment associated with multi-story commercial and lab buildings. This includes maintenance tasks ranging from changing air filters to replacing electric motors on large air handling units utilizing a university vehicle. Install replacement coils, motors, electronics, compressors, thermostats, humidistats, fans, and other components of chilled water and direct expansion environmental control systems to include commercial refrigeration and process heating and cooling. Treat hydronic system loops to maintain water quality. Utilize measuring instruments such as multimeters, refrigeration gauges, thermo-hygrometers, etc., and applies principles of thermodynamics and physics to resolve issues. Work with a team under the direction of work leaders to solve complex technical issues with HVACR equipment. Maintain records and prepares reports on repairs and services according to university and regulatory requirements. Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of all systems. Read and interprets drawings and technical manuals. Works from written and oral instructions. Serve as on-call and essential personnel, which requires occasional irregular work hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency closures, to meet the department's and the university's needs.
