Job Description

About the Opportunity What You'll Do Under the general supervision of the HVAC Trades Manager, the HVAC System Technician is responsible for the diagnosis, maintenance, installation and repair of various types of HVAC, heating and filtering equipment to ensure that such systems are functioning effectively and efficiently. The HVAC Systems Technician must have extensive experience with the installation, troubleshooting, and servicing of large-scale systems, including chillers, package units, split systems, and other equipment designed for air conditioning, refrigeration, and climate control. The HVAC Systems Technician will specialize in maintaining and repairing individual HVAC components such as damper actuators, valve actuators, thermostats, and Laboratory Fume Hood exhaust systems to ensure precise functionality and optimal performance of integrated systems. The HVAC Systems Technician will diagnose malfunctions in control systems and repair air conditioning (A/C) units, ensuring optimal performance and system reliability. The HVAC Systems Technician must have knowledge of standard mechanical system configurations (e.g., VAV, constant volume with or without reheat), DDC control systems, and water treatment for closed and open loop systems. Familiarity with steam systems, chiller operations, cooling towers, pumps, and associated equipment is essential, along with a general proficiency in total building operations. The HVAC Systems Technician typically works a regular schedule but must be available for emergency repairs, overtime, or coverage as needed, during extreme weather conditions, and critical campus events. The role may also require non-mechanical work as needed to ensure proper plant operations. The HVAC Systems Technician is considered essential personnel. This is a condition of employment. Technician Level:
HVAC System Technician 1 Minimum of 3 years of current field service experience in a commercial/institutional setting working under a licensed contractor or maintenance organization Certification in EPA/DEP and Universal CFC reclamation HVAC Systems Technician 2 Minimum of 5 years of current field service experience in a commercial/institutional setting as a licensed HVAC technician Valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License Certification in EPA/DEP and Universal CFC reclamation Basic Requirements for All High School diploma or GED Valid US Driver's license and clean driving record Must be able to read and comprehend blueprints Must have working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment, BAS systems, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (Archibus preferred) Must have effective oral and written communication skills Must possess solid time management and organizational skills, work well under pressure, and juggle multiple tasks effectively prioritizing competing requirements Must be able to work professionally and tactfully with fellow employees, faculty, students, and staff to deal with difficult people and/or stressful scenarios Must maintain a professional appearance and adhere to the University's uniform policy Must be physically able to meet all job requirements including lifting items over 50 lbs and the ability to bend, sit, squat, stand, crawl, walk, climb, push/pull, kneel, handle objects (manual dexterity), reach above shoulder level, and use fine finger movements. Must be able to work alone and climb multiple sets of stairs, work off ladders, staging, lifts, etc.

Required to work indoors and outdoors in potentially cramped spaces, during inclement weather year-round Must successfully complete a criminal background check and motor vehicle record check.
