The Water Resources Plant Mechanic ensures that pumps, motors, piping systems, chemical feed equipment, and related components remain in top working condition. This role maintains the foundation that supports our city's health, safety, and resilience. About the
Role:
The Water Resources Plant Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work focused on installation, repair, and maintenance of key components within water and wastewater treatment facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Install, repair, and maintain pumps, motors, fans, chemical feed equipment, compressors, valves, piping, bulk chemical tanks, generators, diesel engines, and gates Troubleshoot mechanical problems and determine effective solutions Make recommendations on equipment repair, replacement, and upgrades Maintain compliance with OSHA standards, safe work practices, and departmental procedures Schedule and perform preventative maintenance to reduce downtime and extend equipment life Log all work performed, including problems found, corrective actions, preventive measures, and work hours Provide lead support and guidance to Mechanics-in-Training, Maintenance Helpers, and Laborers Assist with hauling ashes and screenings for disposal by operating a tandem dump truck Participate in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours and weekend coverage
Ideal Candidate Attributes:
Strong mechanical aptitude with experience working on industrial equipment Ability to diagnose equipment issues using both hands-on skills and technical knowledge Dependable, safety-conscious, and committed to precision in all tasks Clear communicator who can document work thoroughly and train others as needed Comfortable working outdoors, around heavy equipment, and in industrial environments Reliable team contributor who can work independently when required Your Career Path! This role provides opportunities for advancement to Plant Mechanic II , Maintenance Lead , or other skilled trades roles within Water Resources. Other Position Details This position is Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Work includes after-hours response during an on-call rotation. Qualifications Minimum Q ualifications : High school diploma /GED "OR" an equivalency of 3 years of education and" 6 years of related work experience in a mechanical or electronic field 4 years of related experience in a mechanical or electronic field Valid Driver's License. Prior experience with small tools, welders, cutting torches, and other troubleshooting tools. Certified Fork Lift Operator (or the ability to obtain within 6 months) Class B Commercial Driver's License (or the ability to obtain within 6 months) An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications ): Previous work experience in a Water Reclamation facility Experience with Microsoft Office Software Previous experience working with diesel power generators
