Job Description
Astoria Energy and Astoria Energy II are two 650 MW combined-cycle power plants located side by side on the East River in northwest Queens, New York. Both facilities use 2x1 GE 7FA gas turbines—Astoria Energy with an Alstom steam turbine and Astoria Energy II with a GE D11 steam turbine—to provide efficient, reliable power to the region. In addition to natural gas, Astoria Energy is capable of burning ultra-low sulfur No. 2 fuel oil, enhancing fuel flexibility and operational resilience. Opportunity Summary The Mechanic Tech is responsible for maintaining and repairing equipment and systems within the power plant and associated facilities, as well as supporting plant start-up, shutdown, and operations as needed. This role requires a high level of skill in the inspection, repair, testing, adjustment, installation, and removal of plant equipment. Primary Functions Perform corrective and preventive maintenance duties on all major equipment and systems as well as emergency backup systems Complete required documentation such as job safety analysis (JSA), lockout tag out and work permits, assist with job plan creation. Complete feedback on assigned work orders as necessary Maintain complete equipment files, logs, and drawings for all designated equipment Maintain and update the preventive maintenance management program for plant equipment, i.e., pumps, valves, gearboxes, turbines, etc. Forecast and inventory spare parts to maintain plant reliability. Assist in physical inventories Participate in the administrative maintenance management system for the plant operating and maintenance manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams and preventive/predictive maintenance records Responsible for the care and maintenance of all tools (such as hand tools and specialty tools) used in the maintenance function Attend and participate in all company sponsored safety, environment, and other training Comply with all company safety maintenance and operations work procedures and standards Oversee, direct, and assist with contractors to facilitate efficient execution of the company's work Complete other tasks as requested by the Maintenance Manager NAES Safe Safety is a core value of NAES and as a condition of employment, all employees are expected to be mentally alert and work safely at all times. Effectiveness in carrying out this responsibility is part of the evaluation of each employee's performance. Working Relationships The Mechanic Tech reports to the Maintenance Manager, and at times receives general direction and guidance from the Plant Manager. The Mechanic Tech collaborates with all other plant personnel on matters pertaining to the daily operation of the plant. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Physical requirements include standing and walking for extended periods on uneven, rough, or inclined surfaces; climbing stairs, ladders, and equipment; and working from elevated platforms or confined locations at varying heights. Frequent lifting, carrying, and maneuvering of materials or tools weighing up to 50 pounds is expected. The power plant environment will involve working in an industrial setting, which can include confined spaces, low-clearance areas, or restricted pathways. Tasks may require crawling, kneeling, or stooping in tight quarters. Exposure to vibration, high noise levels, moisture, extreme temperatures, and low-light conditions is common. Work may also take place indoors or in outdoor settings where weather conditions can change, such as the loading and unloading of trucks onsite. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and may include hard hats, safety glasses or goggles, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, gloves (including hot- and cut-resistant), flame-resistant clothing (FRC), and fall protection harnesses. Respirator fit testing may be required. Fitness for Duty All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening. Work Schedule Regular scheduled workweek is Monday to Friday from 6:00am to 2:00pm. Position requires extended working hours, overtime, and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. Hours may be adjusted by Management at times. "On call" status will periodically be required. Compensation Initial compensation will range from $68.01 to $70.01 per hour. Job Qualifications We are looking for a skilled Mechanic Tech with experience in power generation operations and maintenance, coupled with a proven ability to contribute effectively to team success and consistently meet performance standards. Ability to understand and follow procedures and instructions specific to the assigned area, typically acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent; trade school certification is a plus Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within 6 months of hire Technician-level experience in a power plant or related industry, including hands-on experience with predictive and preventative maintenance practices and programs for plant equipment (e.g., pumps, valves, gearboxes, turbines) Proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as MP2, SAP, or Maximo, and general computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases) Ability to perform equipment alignment and troubleshoot mechanical issues, applying creative solutions as needed Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and P&IDs Strong commitment to safety, including planning work in compliance with safety protocols and identifying parts and resource requirements Skilled in the use of hand and power tools Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills, with the ability to contribute both as a team member and in a leadership capacity Self-directed with the ability to work independently Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver's license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
