Job Description
Position Summary We are seeking a skilled Traveling Elevator Mechanic (Installation Focus) to join our field operations team. This role is responsible for the safe assembly, installation, alignment, and inspection of new elevator systems (including both hydraulic and traction units) for commercial low-rise projects. As an installer, you will apply mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic expertise to erect elevator components, connect systems to power and controls, and ensure that finished elevators meet code, safety, and performance standards. You will be part of a disciplined field crew and work closely with superintendents, field leads, and project management to deliver quality installations on schedule. Key Responsibilities Elevator System Installation Assemble and install complete elevator systems, including hoistway components, guide rails, cabs, interiors, doors, machine room equipment, and controllers. Install mechanical and electrical components per manufacturer specifications and engineering drawings. Connect wiring to motors, switches, relays, and safety systems; rig and align structural and moving parts. Blueprint & Technical Interpretation Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and installation diagrams to plan and execute installation tasks properly. Testing & Inspection Perform system testing (operational runs, level checks, safety device verification) to confirm correct installation and code compliance. Make adjustments, alignments, and fine-tuning to meet specifications and prepare for inspection readiness. Adhere to all federal, state, and local safety regulations and industry codes throughout installation activities. Maintain a safe work environment and use personal protective equipment (PPE), hoisting gear, and fall protection reliably. Collaboration & Jobsite Coordination Work closely with field leadership (Superintendent, leads, and Project Manager) to coordinate labor needs, materials staging, and installation sequencing. Provide real-time field feedback regarding material, site, or technical issues affecting installation progress. Documentation & Reporting Complete installation logs, checklists, alignment records, and any required field paperwork accurately and promptly. Report system status, testing results, deficiencies, and corrective actions to field leadership. Skills & Competencies Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to use hand tools, power tools, hoisting equipment, and diagnostic devices. Proficient with electrical wiring, hydraulic systems, and control panels relevant to elevator systems. Excellent blueprint reading, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills. Effective communication and teamwork skills; ability to follow instructions and coordinate with field teams. Committed to safety with a proactive mindset toward jobsite risk management. High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an elevator apprenticeship program or equivalent field experience. Proven installation experience with elevator systems (hydraulic and/or traction). Valid driver's license and ability to travel between sites. Preferred
- State or local elevator mechanic licensure where applicable.
- Prior experience with installation and inspection-ready installations.
- Familiarity with
OSHA, ASME A17.1/CSA B44
codes, or other applicable standards. Physical & Work Environment Elevator installation requires physical strength and endurance, including:- Lifting, carrying, and positioning heavy parts and equipment.
- Working in hoistways, pits, machine rooms, and other confined or elevated spaces.
- Use of specialized rigging equipment, ladders, and power tools.
- Occasional overtime to meet construction milestones.
