Building Maintenance Worker - EXAM Salary $27.51 - $34.83 Hourly Location Varies by position Job Type Full-time Job Number 26-3494-C1 Department 60 Columbus Water & Power Division Division of Water Reclamation Opening Date 04/27/2026 Closing Date 5/11/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Description Benefits Questions Definition Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing a wide variety of general maintenance tasks associated with the building trades both in and out of buildings; performs related tasks as required Examples of Work (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.) Discusses assignments with supervisor who outlines work to be done; reviews blueprints or rough sketches with supervisor to ensure that all aspects of the work are understood; Withdraws tools and supplies from a store yard necessary to accomplish work; Performs rough carpentry work such as preparing concrete forms, patching drywall, repairing flooring, siding, and gutters; Repairs or replaces doors, locks, and screens; applies wall materials and acoustic ceiling tiles; builds cupboards, sheds, stairs, and partitions; Builds fences, backstops for ball diamonds, and benches for use at playgrounds and in parks; Performs minor electrical repair work such as maintaining fans, electric stoves, light fixtures, LED conversions, and replacing light bulbs with power supply properly removed; Inspects and makes a variety of repairs to sinks, urinals, toilets and other plumbing fixtures; replaces damaged sewer lines and drainage tile on City-owned property; removes obstructions from sewer lines and repairs leaks in pipes; Utilizes computer software to complete work orders and time sheets; Maintains records of work performed and materials used; Removes old paint, and/or applies paint to structures or surfaces; Adjusts settings and performs preventative maintenance on heating and air conditioning equipment; Participates in activities to remove snow and ice from building entrances, steps, landings, sidewalks, and ramps, including shoveling snow and the application of ice melting materials; Moves furniture and office equipment; May perform minor masonry repairs; May unload trucks delivering materials and supplies and store them in assigned areas; May use weed eaters, riding lawn tractors, and push mowers; may trim trees, shrubs, and/or bushes using chainsaws, hedge trimmers, and related tools; May climb ladders and work at levels of elevation utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment; May operate equipment such as manlifts, forklifts, and power washers; May perform work that requires maneuvering in and out of tight spaces and confined areas; May drive a light-duty truck to and from a job site. COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION ANNOUNCEMENT
The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be MERGED , according to score, with the names of applicants on the current eligible list. If you are interested in having your name included on the eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. Questions regarding this process can be directed to the Test Center at 614-645-7439. The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 100% covering Oral Comprehension, Tools & Measurements, Safety, Building Maintenance & Repair (electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, HVAC, building equipment, and appliances), Work Orders and Records, Basic Math, Map Reading, and Outlook 2016/2019. The exam is expected to be administered in June 2026. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time. All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
