Job Description

This position is part-time, budgeted for 20 hours per week, allocated to the Government Buildings division. This role is focused primarily on building maintenance and janitorial services of City facilities. Candidates must be willing to work early morning shifts. To perform a variety of maintenance and construction work on various facilities and structures within an assigned area or department including but not limited to construction, repair and maintenance of parks, buildings, or streets; to operate a variety of maintenance vehicles, equipment and tools; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from supervisory staff. Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
Perform a variety of maintenance and construction work on various facilities and structures within an assigned area or department. Operate a variety of maintenance vehicles, equipment, hand and power tools. Clean and perform minor maintenance work on equipment, buildings and facilities within an assigned area; clean and maintain all maintenance vehicles, equipment, and tools. Perform a variety of parks grounds keeping duties including trimming trees and shrubs, removing tree stumps and roots, and planting trees. Mow, edge, trim and clean all parks grounds areas; remove litter and trash from parks grounds; clean and maintain parks restroom facilities. Complete maintenance work orders and keep track of all materials used during a job. Repair and rebuild equipment in park facilities and playgrounds as needed. Perform building maintenance duties in assigned facilities; clean, vacuum and buff floors; clean restrooms. Maintain inventory of maintenance parts and supplies. Attend training as required. Respond and perform assigned duties in the event of a City declared emergency. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledge of:
Basic maintenance and construction materials, methods and terminology. Basic methods and techniques of grounds keeping. Use of basic hand and power tools.
Ability to:
Participate in maintenance work for an assigned area of the City. Learn to operate a variety of maintenance vehicles, equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner. Learn occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Learn pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations. Perform heavy manual labor. Mow, edge, trim and clean all parks grounds areas. Clean and maintain parks facilities. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
No prior experience is required; zero to one year of general maintenance or construction experience is desirable.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions :
Field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, heat; electrical energy; radiant energy; potentially hazardous chemicals; moving objects/vehicles; inclement weather conditions; work in or with water; work on slippery or uneven surfaces; work or inspect underground; work around heavy construction equipment.
Physical Conditions :
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; walking over slippery or uneven surfaces; light to heavy, lifting and carrying; frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
