Job Description

DESCRIPTION
Under general direction from the Maintenance Manager, the Assistant Trainer - Fleet Maintenance assists in planning, coordinating, and implementing the District's Maintenance Department skills training and educational development programs. The position assists with new-hire and ongoing training programs for all Maintenance Department employees, which include, but are not limited to, safety, job-specific training, technical bus maintenance training, and Maintenance Department equipment operation. Assist with planning and implementation of safety and maintenance training programs for the Maintenance Department employees as required to maintain compliance with Federal, State, Local regulations, and District policies. Assists with the scheduling of ongoing employee skills training, safety, education, and development programs for all levels of the Maintenance Department.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
: This position requires technical knowledge and experiential background in vehicle/fleet maintenance training, with the ability to assist in the delivery of safety, mechanical, and technical training for bus fleet operations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
: This classification reports to the Maintenance Manager. This position does not have any direct supervisory responsibility over other classifications but will provide instructional oversight and guidance to maintenance staff undergoing training activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The functions and duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if the work is related. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed. Conduct orientation classes for new maintenance employees with instruction and training in areas of safety, bus maintenance, emergency response, hazardous material handling, environmental policies, District policies, and proper utilization of shop equipment. Assists with planning, coordination, and implementation of training programs for mechanical staff. Trains staff on safe and proper service practices, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, of vehicles, equipment, and associated components and systems such as engines, transmissions, air conditioning, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, brakes, chassis, electronics, fare collection equipment, and body repair and painting. Participates in revising and adapting training materials to meet District maintenance training needs. Assists in planning and developing training schedules and coordinates schedules with the respective Maintenance Manager & Supervisors. Remain current in transit training issues and training techniques, including new theories in adult learning. Prepares training aids to assist with employee training, which could include course material, computers, PPE, and other related items; ensures proper safety practices and procedures are followed, including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and correct handling and disposal of hazardous materials. Conduct re-training programs/classes for Maintenance employees as regulated or required in all specified areas. Assist with training for a variety of programs, including, but not limited to, Illness and Injury Prevention, Disaster Preparedness, Hazardous Waste Communication, Storm Water Pollution Control, Forklift Operator Licensing, Workplace Violence Prevention, and Heat Illness Prevention. Complete behind the wheel road test demonstrations for PMI (Preventative Maintenance Inspections). Bring buses in and out of the Maintenance shop safely during training demonstrations. Assist with training related to the Agency Safety Plan (ASP). Maintain accurate training records and documentation. Reports to work as scheduled. Performs other related work duties as required.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities is as follows:
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE
: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in a related field preferred. A minimum of five (5) years of experience in technical and safety training programs. Experience in heavy-duty fleet maintenance or public transit maintenance operations is desirable. Experience in fleet preventative maintenance programs and commercial vehicle regulations is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be combined towards meeting minimum requirements.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
: Possess or have the ability to obtain a Class B California Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brake endorsements. A current, valid California Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to the District. Possess or have the ability to obtain Transit Bus H series ASE Master certification.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL TASKS & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The physical and mental demands described here are representative but not exhaustive of those that must be met by employees to successfully perform the essential functions of this class. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Exposure to cold temperatures ranging from 20°F to 50°F for a duration of 30 minutes. The District mandates strict adherence to safety protocols, requiring employees to wear adequately warm clothing, personal safety equipment, and comply with Hazardous Waste, and MSDS requirements (F). Exposure to high temperatures ranging from 80°F to 120°F. The District requires employees to wear suitable lightweight clothing and stay hydrated to prevent dehydration (F). Exposure to loud noises for one hour while communicating with mechanics or assessing maintenance issues. The District mandates the use of safety ear protection equipment during such instances (F). The role entails periods of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily work tasks. (F) Grasping, repetitive hand movements, and precise coordination when operating a computer keyboard or phone. (F). Speak and hear in communicating with internal and external stakeholders (F)Use the telephone to place and receive calls (F), Use writing utensils to write memos, take notes, compose letters, etc. (F). Use the computer mouse and keyboard to perform data entry functions and create training documents, presentations and materials. The position necessitates far and near vision for utilizing a computer monitor, reading reports and documents, as well as acute hearing when engaging in phone and personal interactions (F). Lift, drag, or push files, papers, documents, or boxes weighing up to 25 pounds (O). Further, this role requires the operation of a bus, and/or motor vehicle to train employees and/or to conduct district business. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION A
background check will be conducted for this classification. All Golden Empire Transit District employees are designated "Disaster Service Workers" through state and local laws (CA Government Code Sec. 3100-3109). In the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, GET employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers. Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees' normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency. As Disaster Service Workers, all Golden Empire Transit District employees are expected to remain at work, or to report for work as soon as practicable following a significant emergency or disaster.
