Job Description

MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT HOURLY RATE
- $20.06 - $20.86 THIS
RECRUITMENT IS TO FILL ONE

VACANCY IN THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT AND TO ESTABLISH AN ELIGIBILITY LIST TO BE USED FOR FUTURE VACANIES.
The examination process will consist of a competitive evaluation of qualifications based on a review of the application and supplemental questionnaire; therefore, it is to your advantage to provide as much detailed and relevant work experience. Please note that only applicants who are among the most qualified and/or best meet or exceed the requirements and needs of the City, will be invited to participate further in the selection process.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND HOURS
This is a part-time, non-benefited, "at-will" position with an average work schedule of approximately 20 hours per week. Working hours will be assigned at the discretion of the Public Works Department and may include flexible hours between 6:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, as well as mornings, afternoons, holidays, and/or weekends. Total hours worked shall not exceed 960 hours per fiscal year.
THE POSITION
Under close supervision, the Maintenance Assistant will perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual maintenance duties throughout the Landscape and/or Streets Maintenance division. The following description of duties is explanatory, but not restrictive. It is not to be construed to limit the assignment of duties and responsibilities. When assigned to Street Maintenance Division duties may include, but are not limited to: assist in repaving, patching, overlaying, pothole and crack sealing repair of asphalt; remove damaged improvements and set concrete forms; repair curbs gutters and sidewalks; responsible for the upkeep of bus shelters; pressure washing as needed; and perform other related duties as assigned. When assigned to the Landscape Maintenance Division duties may include, but are not limited to: assist in landscape turf mowing and edging, weed abatement, hedge and shrub trimming and tree planting; litter control pick-up at various park sites throughout the City; perform daily litter and debris control; clean and maintain City facilities and park shelters; perform janitorial services as required; and perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITES
Knowledge of safety rules and practices pertaining to landscape maintenance. Knowledge of proper use, maintenance, and repair methods and techniques of equipment and tools. Knowledge of and ability to follow standard safety precautions to ensure safe use of equipment and tools. Ability to read, write and carry-out oral and written directions utilizing the English language; Provide excellent customer service skills; ability to effectively interact with City staff, volunteers, and the public.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
This position involves the ability to frequent bending, twisting, walking on irregular surfaces, and lifting up to 50 pounds on a continuous basis; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, mechanical and electrical equipment. Must be able to kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, climb and travel to different sites and locations. A Class C Driver's License and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record. Prior experience not required; however, incumbent will be required to operate light landscape maintenance equipment and must have knowledge of proper use and maintenance of equipment.
