Job Description

Normal work schedule includes weekends (Saturday and Sunday, morning and/or evening shifts) and select weekdays. Salary effective June 29, 2026 with approved cost-of-living adjustment: Bi-weekly $2,097.65 - $2,610.93 Annually $54,538.90 - $67,884.18 Under general supervision, performs manual and semi-skilled maintenance work at assigned job sites including streets, parkways, civic facilities, athletic facilities, aquatics facilities, and parks. (These examples do not include all the duties which may be assigned.) Performs custodial and general maintenance of Civic Center buildings, park buildings and restrooms, sports facilities, aquatics center, parks, streets, rights-of-ways and other City facilities. Cultivates, weeds, edges, mows, waters, and trims lawns, shrubs, trees and groundcovers at assigned job sites. Diagnoses diseases and insects affecting plants and vegetation; performs necessary spraying of herbicides or insecticides. Performs graffiti removal. Assists in the installation and maintenance of sprinkler and irrigation systems. Assists with minor construction including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and masonry repair. Assists in the set-up of equipment, stage, and bleachers for special events. Performs janitorial cleaning and upkeep of restrooms at park locations and other City facilities. Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and power and hand tools. Removes and clears debris from gutters, culverts, and drainage structures. Participation on the emergency after hours call-out team will be required on a rotating schedule. Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures; performs related duties assigned.
Knowledge of:
The use and maintenance of basic power and hand tools, equipment, materials, and methods used in building and ground maintenance work. Related work hazards and safety procedures. Operation of mower, trimmer, irrigation, and carpentry equipment, and heavy-duty equipment such as backhoe and tractor.
Ability to:
Use and maintain basic power equipment, materials, hand tools, and maintenance and automotive equipment. Perform manual labor in a variety of weather conditions and perform work requiring physical strength, dexterity, and endurance. Read, write, and carry out oral and written instructions in English. Meet the physical requirements stated in the City's Job Function Analysis for the position, including ability to lift up to 75 lbs. Operate a motor vehicle safely. Exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact with staff and the public. Utilize quality customer service skills and techniques. Work different shifts including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Experience:
One year of work experience in building maintenance, custodial maintenance, street maintenance, landscape maintenance, construction trades or related filed as required.
Education:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent is required. Coursework from an accredited institution in building repair, public works, or a related field is highly desirable.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required. Possession of a valid CPR, AED, First Aid certificate is required within the first three months of employment. Appointments are normally made at the first step of the salary range. Consideration and approval for a salary higher than the first step is done on a case-by-case basis.
