MAINTENANCE WORKER II
Full-Time/Represented Closed/Promotional Final Filing Date:
11:59 p.m., Tuesday, May 19, 2026 The City of Pico Rivera strives to support and enhance a high quality of life for the residents, businesses and visitors by providing well planned, environmentally sensitive, cost-effective infrastructure and services to promote public health, personal safety and transportation. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for residents through responsive, efficient, and effective delivery of services to every neighborhood and by reflecting a can-do attitude with our customers and stakeholders. The Public Works Department is responsible for the engineering, permitting, maintenance and operation of the City's infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, roadway medians, alleys, water system, sewer collection, storm drains, public parking lots, traffic signals, etc. The Department also manages maintenance and public service programs such as graffiti abatement, tree trimming, street sweeping, trash and recycling services, parks and street maintenance, and utilities and facilities maintenance. In addition, the Department Manages a comprehensive capital improvement program that provides roadway rehabilitation, signal coordination, trail construction, etc. The Position This is the journey-level class in the Maintenance Worker series and predominantly performs skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, sidewalks, curbs, parkways, and storm drains; to spray, plant, water, remove, and trim trees; to maintain and repair grounds and to repair and maintain signs and pavement markings; to paint and pressure wash public and municipal buildings; and to operate a variety of maintenance equipment, and to train and instruct Maintenance Worker I, Maintenance Aides and other hourly employees. The Maintenance Worker II receives relatively less instruction or assistance and is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Crew Leader (Maintenance Worker III) in that the latter performs the more complex duties related to the assigned areas of responsibility. General supervision is provided by the Maintenance Supervisor. Functional or technical supervision may also be received from a Maintenance Crew Leader. The schedule for this position will be Monday through Thursday, 6:00AM - 4:30PM (schedule may change based on the needs of the department). Employees work a 4/10 schedule. This position will also be required to work off-hours Standby Callback to include non-traditional hours including nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays while on standby status for emergency response. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work employees may perform in this classification. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Repair and patch streets by hand-sweeping surfaces, loading asphalt, raking and shoveling asphalt, and operating asphalt spreader, or working under the supervision of employees skilled in the repair of concrete or the installation of block walls, and drainage devices. Repair or maintain storm drains, catch basins, and storm drainpipes. Operate equipment on routine assignment or on a training basis, including backhoe, tractor, compressor, cement mixer, sandblasting equipment, and paint sprayers. Perform concrete work such as curb, gutter, driveway, and sidewalk repair. Paint or sandblast walkways, curbs, intersections, buildings, walls, and signs to remove graffiti. Perform regular storm drain maintenance and emergency storm work. Set up and maintain barricades, detours, and traffic control systems. Clean and maintain tools. Prepare stains and mix paints for painting and spraying. Plant, water, weed, trim, seed, renovate, and fertilize turf and otherwise maintain plants, shrubs, trees, and flower beds. Repair and replace sprinklers and irrigation systems. Spade and otherwise prepare ground around plants and shrubs, including mixing and applying fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides. Pick up rubbish and paper and perform general ground cleaning. Maintain and prepare athletic fields. Repair restrooms, sinks, toilets, and drinking fountains. Operate and maintain small power mowers, edgers, sprayers, and other equipment. Drive vehicles to transport materials, sprayers, tools, and equipment as required. Assist in moving and installing park and recreational equipment. Operate the mowing equipment, tractors, trenchers, and a variety of hand and power tools used in park, median island, and landscape maintenance work. Perform routine preventive maintenance on mowing equipment and hand and power tools used in the workplace. Respond to inquiries and complaints from the general public regarding trees and tree trimming procedures. Check oil pressure, fuel, and tire conditions on all equipment. Respond to emergency calls as necessary. Perform related duties as assigned.Knowledge of:
- Streets, grounds, maintenance and/or construction materials, tools and equipment.
- Basic tree trimming methods, techniques, equipment, and procedures.
- Safety precautions used in construction work.
- Operation of power equipment, including trucks, loaders and related tools and equipment.
- Street construction materials, methods, terminology, and practices.
- Methods, techniques, and safety practices used in maintaining streets, catch basins, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
- Traffic control setup and proper application to work safely in streets.
Skills/Ability to:
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Perform skilled tasks in the construction and maintenance of streets, grounds, and related public works facilities.
- Perform heavy physical labor.
- Operate a variety of tree-trimming equipment and tools.
- Remove concrete and asphalt using a backhoe, concrete saw, and various hand tools.
- Work well with others and work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Assist in the training of less experienced personnel and take responsibility for periodically overseeing the productivity of lesser-ranked staff.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or G.E.D. is required. Three (3) years' experience in heavy manual construction or maintenance work is required. A Veteran's Credit of 10 points may be applied once a candidate has qualified for the eligibility list. Applicants must submit proof of service/honorable discharge in accordance with the City of Pico Rivera's Rules and Regulations along with application materials prior to the filing date. Proof must be submitted with the application materials to be eligible for veteran's credit. Veterans who wish to utilize this credit must have served on a full-time basis (not reserve or auxiliary) in the armed forces for a minimum of six months (180 days).TESTING:
